The Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization, Inc. (MEVO) is a youth-lead, environmental sustainability not-for-profit organization based in Northern New Jersey.  We are the most passionate group of environmental volunteers around! Founded in 2008 and lead entirely by unpaid staff, we have carried out over 70 volunteer events, engaged over 340 people, mainly high school and college students, in carrying out huge environmental service projects.  Trash clean-ups, tree plantings, building and maintaining organic farms, hiking trail construction and soil rehabilitation, and painting/distributing recycling bins are only a handful of projects we perform.  We have received awards ranging from the Russell Berrie Award for Making a Difference to the OneChange.org Stellar Volunteer Award.

We are seeking a passionate and inspirational leader who wants to help develop our not-for-profit organization to the next level.  We are hiring more staff, applying for larger and larger foundation grants, growing our programs rapidly, and bringing in new partners daily.  In this job you will work as a partner to our Executive Director and Founder, Eric J. Fuchs-Stengel, and will learn how to carry out different tasks of upper level administrative work in addition you will get experiential learning in managing a not-for-profit organization and growing an organization from the ground up.  This job is for a passionate, friendly, independent thinker, and leader, ages 16 – 25, who wants to get hands on experience in leading a not-for-profit organization.  We need an individual who wants to become a leader in the field of environmental sustainability  and gain experience in starting new ventures and building community relationships.

This internship starts as an Assistant position, but once you have mastered the job and show us your passion for environmental sustainability we want you to become a Partner of our organization leading it in new and exciting directions! We need leaders not assistants (although we totally respect people who like assistant jobs =D).

Requirements:

Passionate, friendly, independent thinker, and leader. Should all be characteristics you feel good describing yourself as and striving for!

20 hours a week.  This time is spent between e-mails, phone calls, and meetings.  We do not have a formal office schedule so this is not a 9am -5pm weekday only job.  We believe that you would spend at maximum 20 hours a week working for MEVO.

Mode of transportation. You will be going to a lot of meetings locally and an occasional meeting within a fairly substantial driving distance.  You need to have a way to your meetings and to MEVO’s volunteer events.

Minimum 1 semester time commitment.  In order to learn the job and carry out a lot of the work we need at minimum 1 semester of commitment.

Responsibilities:

Outreach and meeting with local community members for a variety of different reasons.  For example, meeting with a person who is donating land for organic farming or meeting with a community member on a location of pollution in town.

Emailing and Phone calling currently MEVO has a lot of e-mails, phone calls, and relationship building we are backed up on.  You will be e-mailing and calling a lot of community members to meet with them on ideas, partnering, and growing environmental sustainability in NJ.

Management of volunteers MEVO has lots of volunteers, interns, and other staff members involved in our organization.  As an Administrative Partner part of your job will be managing some of these volunteers and making sure our programs are operating smoothly.
