Baby Fox Spotted in Mahwah

Police say not uncommon

A baby fox was spotted walking along the sidewalk between the library and Jackson Lane in Mahwah this week. The fox, after walking five feet along Ridge Road, ran into the bushes toward Jackson Lane.

Sgt. William McNamara from the Mahwah Police Department says this isn't uncommon.

"Since early Spring we've seen a bunch of them. There was one behind Town Hall yesterday and one by 202 in a drainpipe."

When asked if parents should be concerned for their children walking along Ridge Road, Sgt. McNamara explained, "they are scavengers. They feed off road kill. The only time kids should be concerned is if it doesn't maintain a safe distance."

Sgt. McNamara believes the correlation between the extreme heat, then break in temperature and number of foxes spotted during the cooler conditions is no coincidence.
