Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

Update: This article was updated at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7 with quotes from Gov. Chris Christie.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan.

NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you."

"The task of perfecting our union moves forward. It moves forward because of you," Obama told supporters in his acceptance speech shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. "It moves forward because you reaffirmed the spirit that has triumphed over war and depression. The spirit that has lifted this country from the depths of despair to the great heights of hope.

"We are an American family and we rise or fall together as one nation and as one people."

The president, who visited the Garden State last week in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, pointed to government leaders on both sides of the aisle in New Jersey and New York who have come together to assist those in need.

"I've seen it on the shores of New Jersey and New York where leaders of every party and every level of government have swept aside their differences to help a community rebuild from a wreckage of a terrible storm," Obama said.

The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy.

The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges from both candidates. After a weak performance after the Republican Convention, Romney surged following Obama’s listless performance after the first presidential debate. Nevertheless, the president cemented a lead in battleground states heading into Tuesday’s election.

Obama won New Jersey and its 14 electoral votes.

Obama’s performance in the Garden State wasn't surprising, considering New Jersey has voted for the Democratic candidate in recent presidential elections.

Newark Democratic Mayor Cory Booker offered his support of the president on Twitter soon after the race was called.

"Congratulations PRESIDENT Barack Obama - again!," Booker wrote.

In a brief concession speech delivered before 1 a.m., Romney urged the country's political leaders to come together in a spirit of bipartisanship.

"This is a time of great challenges for America and I pray the president will be successful in guiding our nation," Romney said. "The nation is at a critical point. At times like these we can't risk partisan bickering."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who campaigned across the country for Romney, said he was disappointed by the election results. He dismissed criticism leveled by some Republicans that he had "embraced" Obama during the president's visit to the state in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

"I was the first governor in America to endorese Mitt Romeny. I've
worked harder than any other surrogate other than Paul Ryan," Christie said during a press conference Wednesday. "I'm extraordinarily disappointed. I put a lot of time and effort into the Mitt Romney campaign."

We have a future of more war, more debt, and more inflation to look forward to. And while we can blame ignorance on the part of Obama supporters, equal blame must go to those primary voters who thought that nominating a gun-stealing bailout-loving health care mandating tax-hiking chickenhawk was the best chance we had at defeating him. We could have done far better than this, people - far better. You bear just as much of the responsibility for this as the ignorant supporters of our failed President. This is 2004 all over again, where a lily-white Massachusetts liberal with largely inherited wealth and no charisma loses to an unpopular incumbent. I guarantee you the outcome would have been different had we nominated Ron Paul & Gary Johnson. Good job, ignorant primary voters. Hope you'll be happy with yourselves when this country goes down in flames with four more years of inept liberal leadership. Hopefully now you have learned that it's time to stop running Democrat-lite candidates ... it may be too late, as there may not be an America left in 2016.

Again, had this election been just about the economy then Romney wins but it was also about social issues.

"Inept liberal leadership"? Right, because the president can magically wave away any problem that exists, and this in no way has anything to do with the most ineffective Congress in US history, correct?

Here's a tip: if you're going to claim ignorance on the part of everyone else in the world, I'd no something about the US system of government, so you don't sound, you know, ignorant.

Maybe this country will be divided down the middle 2 America's... I want to move to a red state...! This guy has divided us, and the people that voted him back in will be responsible...as much as the people that sat on their butts at home and felt it was not important to vote...Obama is not a Democrat...he is a Marxist...by his actions and the things he as done and written about. There may be nothing left by 2016. If you have any major surgergies and health issues get them taken care of now...this people will see just how terrible the healthcare will be.

If we had a better candidate to compete with Obama then he would be defeated. To start, Romney can be smart, but I believe that there will never be one strong women to vote for him in this country. we love our freedom and we respect what great-grand-mothers and grandmothers had done in the past to give us all the freedom we have. Second, if someone want to be in the presidency seat that someone must not be too attached to religion. We need real family in the white house, the ones that understand middle class families. We don`t need a president that hire three nannies and tell us how hard his wife work at home to take care his kids. We middle class know how hard it is, because we work hard and most of us pay someone to watch our kids while we work, and when we lose our jobs then we keep our kids at home while we go around looking for another job, we don`t pay a nanny, we take care our kids. Obama does not make decisions alone, he need support, So, we should put some pressure on our congressmen to do their job and support the President, it`s why they represent us, otherwise we don`t need them. It`s not about republican or Democrat, it`s all about doing the right thing now. I wish in the next election we will get two smart and good candidates. This year we had no choice but keep Obama as President. I don`t think there were ignorance about this election but pure common sense. By the way I was all for Garry Johnson or Obama.

As if 4 years of our Country wasn't enough, we get 4 more years of no-jobs, no-economic growth, large corporations getting more handouts, a health care bill that will pit the most deserving over the most needed as far as medicine goes. Your 80 and need a new knee and a 18 year old needs the same, well the 18 year old has more to offer in the future, so he gets the knee you at 80 get the walker. Watch how many more people loose their homes because the big banks that got their handouts still dont comply to the mandated rules set in February 2012. Banks like Chase still make out hand over fist because the President has not put anyone is place to oversee that the banks comply. Like so much from Obama's mouth, it's just empty words. 2016 it will be a much smaller country that's for sure. Remember there is always impeachment and we need to do away with the electoral vote. Let the people cast their vote and that should be the deciding factor, no more early voting either. But I guess when you feel the competition over shadowing you, you bend the rules for your benefit. Romney & Ryan I am still with you! Obama making a statement that Bidden is the best vice-president this country has ever seen? PLEASE!

Maybe thats why 10 baggers were voted out last night...Romney's tactics were so bad in this election, even people on Fox Noise are blasting him. But last few weeks they had him walking on water, go figure huh? Maybe, just maybe if we ALL work together we ALL can make things better faster. But to anyone who is complaining, its sour grapes. I fear for the future of my daughter, only a young child but already $135,000 in debt, thanks to promises made and borrowing done in her name, without her (or my) consent.

Even John Maynard Keynes, the father of borrow-and-spend-your-way-out-of-economic-slowdowns, recognized that money borrowed has to be repaid.

"Backed by the full faith and credit of the United States of America" simply means, "Don't worry, the American taxpayer will repay you and cover any losses".

I fear what another four trillion dollars in public debt and who knows how much in entitlements is going to do to this country.

This election indicates the state of the GOP- You look at the economy and pessimism at the direction of the nation, yet he won? And, in this economic mess, the GOP lost a few senate seats to boot. Akin and Mourdoch(who pushed out a moderate who was an excellent foreign policy wonk) imploding losing says alot about the yahoos that have seized control of the party. Indiana electing a democrat, Snowe retiring because of "no room for moderates" and a common sense guy like Scott Brown losing to Warren reduces the number of officials that can appeal to both sides of the aisle. The GOP better look in the mirror and fix what's broken.

I also think it should be a requirement...that you need to be paying taxes before you can vote. Students in this country have not idea what is going on... the welfare recipients want to continue getting freebies...and the hispanics that used to come to this country to 'work' are now a thing of the past...they come here for free services. Be prepared all for where we are to go... It is no longer what I can do for my country it is 'what my country can do for me"... even JFK is rolling over in his grave...

Wait til the entire story of Benghazi comes out... Watergate and Monica Lowinski was nothing...Any other president would have been taken out of office..It is like the story of the Emporers New Clothes..nobody is saying anything.. Ther is no longer a United State.. We are not better than Greece.. and nobody is going to wake up until it is just too late.. so you people who are thinking you voted Democrat will see. Take the congress and the senate too... it doesn't matter any more.. and Max go ahead and correct my spelling also if you feel it will make you feel like a bigger 'better' 'smarter' person..

Paul, I guess the biggest message is that Obama ran a sleazy campaign and went after Romney personally "we will destroy him personally". It worked because the media had his back and Romney didn't sufficiently stick up for himself. Romney is an incredibly competent, charitable, decent man who worked with liberals in Massachusetts very effectively. Be supportive or envious of his wealth, he took companies that were going out of business and saved them. Focus on the people who had to be fired but don't forget everybody would be laid off (fired) without him. He gave more money to charity and helped with his time. He made enormous commitments to help people. His family seems pretty reasonable. If a guy like Mitt Romney can be made out to be an extremist by the left, then they have gone a ways towards winning the battle to ensure competent Republicans won't run for office. It might be a pyrhhic victory tho at the expense of our country....

Comment_arrow

Marty- Romney unfortunately had to pander to the fringe in the primaries- he was not able to separate himself from the right wing crazies- the Chicago machine tarred him with that fringe and doomed him- even though he was an excellent governor (as a moderate, which didnt go well with the evangelicals and other far right folks). Unless the primary system changes, the Republicans will not occupy the executive office any time soon.

It is sad to see the American Dream going down the toilet. Everyone should realize that you can not keep spending trillions more than you take in without an eventual collapse. As the president knows it is extremely easy to spend other peoples money because he knows how to spend it beter than the person who actually earned it. It is even easier when you do not have to worry about paying it back. What ever happened to hard work and Self Reliance instead of having your hand out for freebies. Tonight's results frighten me that the real American Dream will disappear forever.

Don't be so concerned, Guy. It's called a pyramid (a/k/a Ponzi) scheme. The only people who get screwed are the ones who are at the bottom when it collapses. So as long as you can make it up a few levels before the collapse, you'll be fine. Hopefully we can all ride it a while longer, so it will be just the unborn kids and grandkids who get screwed. Tara, that may be true. But Obama greatly expanded the program well beyond the original intent. He's good at that. A recipient used to be required to spend down easily disposable assets. They were expected to get rid of something like a late model luxury car and instead get something older and cheaper. That was reasonable.
Now, thanks to Obama's pen, they can keep all their nice things as long as they can show no or very little income. Not too hard to hide income if you work off the books or are self employed.
So, the name fits. Obamaphone.

Jerseyswamps, you don't know what you are talking about. The Lifeline Program is run by the FCC and funded by telecommunications companies, not tax dollars. President Obama has not expanded this program. This program has grown because of the increase of telelcommunications companies entering this line of business and marketing the program. In addition, the recession has increased the number of households that are eligible.Further, in the same way that many households have decided to forego a landline in favor of a mobile phone, you are seing people increasingly participate in the program in this way. There was never any requirement for people to shed assets to be eligible. In fact, eligibility is determined by participation in other assistance programs. There is absolutely room for improvement in this program. In fact, it was under the Obama Administration that the FCC implemented initiatives to cut fraud and mismanagement that has saved tens of millions over the last year, with the potential to save millions more. Know the facts and stop spreading misinformation to fuel the hate.

Comment_arrow

jerseyswamps

1:32 pm on Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Tara,
I order to receive the Lifeline assistance for a phone a person needed to be eligible for a welfare program like food stamps. Food Stamps used to require a person to dispose of some assets, like an expensive car. They were allowed to have a basis car, nothing fancy. They were also not allowed to have some other assets that could be easily converted to cash. There were also income limits. Obama did away with the restrictions on resources and the program is now based only on income. If you can hide your income you can keep your luxury items and still get food stamps and therefore become eligible for Lifeline. The program may be run by the FCC and the phone companies may fund it but eligibility for the program is determined by eligibility for welfare which Obama controls. And how do the phone companies pay for these phones? You know darn well those who pay phone bills pay for the program.
With his pen Obama increased food stamps roles by millions. And they thanked him at the polls.
I have over 30+ years working for an agency that ran welfare programs. I know how they work.

Empirical evidence? Since when is empirical evidence needed to believe in one's country? Let's just say I believe the union is much healthier than when Dubya left it in 2008. As Joe Biden says "GM is alive and Bin Laden is dead". Couldn't say that in 2008.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_GM

Does this count as empirical data?

How about this?

GM (the one that went bankrupt) was the largest foreign car maker in China in 2008, battling for supremacy there with Volkswagen.

The “new” GM has continued that overseas success. It sold a record 231,183 vehicles in China in May, up 21 percent from a year earlier, for example. That compares with 245,256 vehicles sold in the United States

Here's the twist. GM is a multinational company. Not being in China would be stupid.

Facts are GM is in China and builds cars in China.

He's a divider? That could NOT be further from the truth. If anything, he compromised way more than 1) he should have and 2) the republicans EVER did in these past four years.

Obama's the quintessential "people person." He got the majority in the battleground states. I'd say that the republicans lost fair and square because they only relate to those filled with paranoia and hate. Obama has his finger on the future pulse of this country. Look at the demographics of the voters for each candidate: Older white affluent males were the only group where Romney had a majority on every issue. Obama's stance on progressive issues that concern women and minorities were those that got him re-elected. It's about time the "old boy's club" is finally cut out of power. This election is proof that Rove and his billionaires could not buy the hearts and the votes of the people by bullying them. "The Party of No" became "The Party of Hate," and this country is tired of it. Please take your sour grapes and lies somewhere else. There is no room for zealotry in this country.

It is conjecture. I will amend my timeframe: "...a week before the 2010 elections Republican Senator Mitch McConnell revealed the GOP's true intent: 'The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.' Divide and conquer. That was the Dems strategy and it worked like a charm. Instead of running a positive campaign with ideas that could solve our problems, the President declared there was a "war" on multiple demographic groups and scared just enough voters into voting for him.

Based on the last four years, we can expect an increase in energy prices (which will hurt the economy), rising health care costs (which will increase our taxes), the continued expansion of government subsidized education (which will create our next big bubble), government subsidized birth control and abortions, a confused foreign policy (I don't think we've heard the last on Benghazi), and a President who seems incapable of leading congress to thoughtful compromises.

But no matter. Everyone who voted for Obama will FEEL good. As you Ds gloat, please keep in mind that while 59 million people in the country voted for Barry, almost 57 million voted for Mitt.

Next...the insane idea that repubs want to take away birth control. Since when is this just a womens' issue anyway? Next...scare the elderly into thinking repubs will take away Medicaid when Obama is siphoning money out of the already insolvent system to partially fund Obamacare....Got it? Obama is not siphoning anything out. Stop listening to Fox. It was covered in the media. You just heard what you wanted to hear. Some people just can't handle the truth.

Unlike the hollow, vapid, empty suit completely devoid of a single tangilble policy - who at least had the decency and class to concede like a man, his supporters amount to nothing more than sore losers, whining about phantom issues that have never materialized. Romney lost because there simply are not enough angry, white racists left in this country. Their numbers shrink every election and yet a smart, successful businessman who made a gazillion dollars didn't have the common sense to realize it. If Romney had been willing to take a stand on even a single issue, he would have won. Instead, he kissed up to the zealots and loons and got utterly embarrassed in a blowout of epic proportions. Get ready folks, you will get what you voted for another four years of misery,so lets how you shred those tears for what you reap with that vote. God Bless those who knew better, lets help those who are having to deal the loses from Sandy. Sure as hell won't see much coming from Obamas Pockets, just stop by the shore to make his face present, nothing more. Its up to us to see our people get the help they need, he is too busy now entertaining those who paid his way for another four years of hell for us. Lord have mercy !

Oh, are you going to donate a year's salary to help those rebuild their houses? What would you have him do? Jump from the helicopter and start putting the sand back? What did Bush do during Katrina - "you're doing a heck of a job, Brownie" Now that was incompetence at it's worst. No - maybe "mission accomplished" was.

If truth be told, it was the lunatic fringe of the radical right that was defeated last night. Many disparate groups pulled together to stop its agenda of restricting the liberty of those who don't agree with trickle down economics, persecution of gays, and women's freedom to choose when to reproduce. The voters rejected the radical right's struggle to return the nation to the gilded age when amoral plutocrats walked over anyone in the way of their acquisition of money and power. The majority of Americans favor a nation with rules that demand an even field. The federal government is the only agency that can devise and enforce this priority. The people have spoken. Mr. Obama is a man of the people who puts the interests of the many over the selfish demands of the few.

I can't believe no one is criticizing the President for not doing more for NJ and residents effected by Hurricane Sandy. He shows up one day, speaks to the Governor, and then leaves to campaign. Wow!( I feel better). Former President Bush was crucified by the press for not doing more for the people in New Orleans. What's wrong with this picture? President Obama is so protected by the press for his incompetence. Is New Jersey not worthy of President Obama's attention? You cannot expect rational thought from irrational people. What did they expect Obama could do? FEMA came in within a day. The National Guard came in. The State Police were at all the intersections when the lights weren't working. The power companies brought crews in from all over the country.

They seem to be like children who didn't get what they wanted so they are having a temper tantrum.

First of all Brad, let's stick to facts and do away with the rumor and hysteria:
It wasn't a "10 dollar box of condoms"... it was a legal *prescription* given to her by a DOCTOR for birth control pills... which can cost anywhere from 20-40 dollars per month, and the usual 'script is for 6 months at a time. Do the math- a lot more than $10.
Second of all, if she has a prescription plan included in her health benefits where does the employer get off deciding WHICH prescriptions she is allowed to get and which she is not? A prescription is a prescription- that is between her and her doctor, NOT the employer to concern himself about.
Too bad that the employer is Catholic, Christian, or from freakin' MARS, and too damn bad they don't like the idea of birth control -- no one is forcing the employer to use birth control pills or any other method. THAT was the issue... not a box of condoms.

You should be totally embarrassed to fall for such empty headed nonsense from Foxnews and Rush Limbough.

I don't care what other women and don't care about limiting their rights, but don't force me into "supporting it" it with my checkbook. All that has to be done is to have a checkbox on the health care selection form that says "I do_ do not_ wish to contribute to or need coverage for contraceptives and abortion." Then I can opt out. Those who need/want it can opt in. Case closed.

"Therefore, I should not be required to pay into insurance or funds that support this violation of my principles." HereWeGoAgain, providing a way for employees to have access to healthcare is not the same as choosing FOR them what treatments are covered. Plenty of women are prescribed contraceptives for dysmenorrhea. Without this treatment, many women would be bed-ridden due to pain and hemorrhaging which would prevent them from working. If you won't support access to contraceptives for their health and well-being, then maybe your selfishness would at least allow you to understand a drop in productivity caused by this condition. I'm sure you would penalize them for missing work, too.

You have no right to choose treatments for anyone but yourself. If anyone wants to know what's wrong with our country today, it's your way of thinking. Your lack if tolerance is dividing us.

He would be every bit as bad. What we need is someone who is more of a libertarian, like a Rand Paul or Gary Johnson. This is what you can expect over the next four years.
Higher fuel prices. $5.00 a gallon plus is not far off. Alternative energy cannot survive without high fuel prices. Don’t forget gas was below $2.00 a gallon before Obama took office. He has no intention of lowering fuel cost so he can promote green energy. Inflation everything in this country revolves around the cost of fuel down to the cost of food to feed your family.
Higher home energy bills gas electric and oil.
Fewer jobs. As a small business owner my company already took measure to reduce our work force due to the fact trucking has become so expensive. Health care cost are also way up. This is also planned so business like mine whom provide health care will not, pushing more people into the government run program. The end result is a single payer system which is Obama goal.
So for all of you Obama supporters I thank you for the head ache which will be the next four years as I try to keep my business above water, and yes this isn’t just about me it is also about the other men and women whom draw a paycheck from this small business.
Oh and a personal note all of you women concerned with choice yes you will still be able to kill babies. Gasoline hit an all-time high national average of $4.20 per gallon in July 2008 - it was the implosion of the world economy in fall 2008 that led to the precipitous drop to about $1.80 per gallon when President Obama was inaugurated in January 2009.

Bellville. If it was just the price of gasoline you may have a point. But a review of ALL commodities from the time the fed began it's quantitaive easing, to keep rates artificially lower and paper over what is really a far worse economy than, apparantly, the majority of voters believe is revealing. We have seen a devaluation of the dollar as one would expect with money supply expansion and subsequent rally in all dollar-denomated commodities *except natural gas whose exploding new supply trumps all else.* Everything is up in price: gasoline, heating oil, corn, wheat, sugar, cotton, gold, platinum, cattle, orange juice, sugar, hogs, copper, canola, soybeans, etc... in short the things that make everything the middle class especially needs. Unless you do not heat your home, cook your food, drive, wear clothes, eat, and light your home at night you have been effected by this cost-of-living increase that began in lock-step with the Jan 2009 easing. If you don't believe me, pull out your last receipt from Shop Rite or you last fill-up reciept from Hess. Your last PSEG bill. Obama's policies are indeed having a dragging effect because he is trying to artificially postpone the inevitable...the inevitable spike in rates, and the resulting inevitable 2013 recession with its chronic unemployment.

Did people complain in the 1940's about the price increases from the 1930's?

The truth of the matter is our two party system is archaic. The current Republican Party is living in the dark ages. It was predicted in the 1950s that eventually the European "whites" would be in the minority numbers wise in the early 2000s. That has come to fruition. Deal with it.

The non-Hispanic White percentage (66% in 2008[5]) tends to decrease every year, and this sub-group is expected to become a plurality of the overall U.S. population after the year 2050. However, White Americans overall (non-Hispanic Whites together with White Hispanics) will remain the majority, at 73.1% (or 303 million out of 420 million) in 2050, from its current, official 80%

Chris Christie did a little "happy dance" when Mitt Romney conceded the election, I'm sure. Make no mistake - he knew exactly what he was doing with that endorsement. He knew that Romney was an unpopular, extremely liberal Governor with a dearth of ideas who could somehow snatch defeat from the jaws of victory much like another milquetoast white man with inherited wealth from Massachusetts did against another disliked incumbent President in 2004. That sets him up perfectly to be the GOP establishment darling in the 2016 presidential election, which is just what he wanted all along. And if he should get nominated, it will prove just how out of touch this party remains with the electorate. We want a choice in the elections, but all we've been getting lately are the extremely liberal Democrats and the Democrat-lite Republicans. The latter has to remember its roots or it will eventually take its place on the list of extinct parties along with the Whigs and the Know-Nothings.

I don't even know what to say to some of your comments, but for some reason I feel the need to say something.... As a moderate republican who has actually switched my tag to "independent" because I was embarrassed by what my party has done and not done over the last 12 years. The republicans have gotten just what they wanted.. They have split this country, they refuse to consider that there may be "Americans" that do not have the same opinions that they do. They have allowed the Tea Party to speak for them for the last 4 years and in effect splinter the party, which has always historically be a democrat issue. They have supported people that only represent 20% or less of the entire population. The have adopted a tactic of scaring "Americans" so that they would hate and judge many other cultures. They have made promises for years but when they had the chance to effect change during the entire Bush administration, they failed to act. Until the Republican party changes their tactics, and starts supporting people that represent the moderate population, which by the way is the majority of both the democrat and republican parties, they will continue to take major hits like this one. When people are down and out they will lean towards someone with their hand out for help, it is a natural impulse. When the republicans finds someone that is in the center and strong enough to pull America out of the ditch we have landed in over the last 20 years they will make a come back.

Both parties have been extremely divisive, from Mitch McConnell saying that the GOP's top priority was defeating Obama, to Nancy Pelosi saying that they had to pass Obamacare so they could find out what was in it. It's becoming apparent that the only way we can get away from this childish partisan bickering is to reject both major parties and start electing independent candidates, like Maine did by sending their former Gov. Angus King to take the U.S. Senate seat formerly occupied by Olympia Snowe.

Enough already, people. This is what the outcome of the election is, and we have to live with it. Not all people who voted for Obama are idiots, as they have been called here, and neither are those who voted for Romney. Each person has a personal reason why they vote for a candidate, and that is their right to do so. But because you don't agree with one side or the other doesn't give you the right to belittle a person because of their opinions. There is no civility in politics, and it has washed over into having no civility among us. While it is our right under the constitution to say what we feel, we wouldn't normally talk this way, would we? When you sit in front of a computer and your fingers touch those keys, you have the freedom to express yourself in a way you might not normally do so. Honestly, do you sit at the dinner table with your kids and talk like this? Do you call your boss or people you work with jerks, socialists, unamerican? Doubtful. The tone you take is passed on to your kids and they learn this, thus a vicious cycle. I am guilty of this as well. Politics gets people fired up - why not try to be civil and stop with the name calling, attacks, and generalizations. It's not getting us anywhere!

On the other hand, China would really, REALLY like to get some more of our money for goods sold to help their own economic recovery, so it's in their very direct national interest to see the American economy recover strongly and the American consumer begin to once again gorge on the inexpensive and often unnecessary items they're manufacturing for us.

What do you think it means to live in say PA or Illinois outside of Phila or chicago? In PA, Obama got 2.9M votes to Romney 2.6M a 300,000 vote win. If you subtract Philadelphia (O560K to R90K), Obama loses PA by 170K. Talk about being disenfranchised when one city determines the outcome for 5M other people. A city that cannot even balance its own budget and has 12% unemployment.

Let's look at Illinois, where Obama won by 830K votes until you subtract Chicago and then Obama loses by 100K. Illinois goes the way Chicago goes. That is why Chicagoland politics are so critical to the Dem machine. All this and Chicago has a budget crisis and unemployment above 10%. I suppose that is considered success if they won right.

But when things are so bad, what do you really win?

And so over the next four years the people will be provoked and buy more guns they will never have the courage to use to defend themselves against an all-powerful government. The game will go on until the time is up for our nation. It is time we as a generation man up for liberty to redeem ourselves in the tear-filled eyes of future generations. If Obama's policies are good, why are 23 million unemployed? If Dem policies work, why do the Abbott schools still fail? That speaks volumes. As far as pop density, what does that have to do with voters being informed or educated on the issues. For example, when the people from Jersey City voted, did they know or care unemployment in the town was double the national average? Do they know that their town and schools are 90% paid for by the suburban taxpayers? Do they even care about balanced budgets or do they vote based on what? First off all you Romney / Ryan lovers out there... what does it say to you when their OWN STATES didn't vote for them... they obviously knew they were not the right choice so obviously AMERICA did make the right choice to keep Obama in office for another 4 years... All you haters need to concede just like Romney did he lost fair and square.... no one wants a RICH, SNOTTY Republican in office who is against women's rights, and wants to raise taxes on the middle class so he can keep his riches in his pocket, among the other things he wanted to do that was only going to hurt us... send more jobs overseas...hmm how will that help our economy...it won't!!!

What bothers me is the rise of the tyranny of the masses. For example, Obama has overtly targeted upper income earners as involuntary, disproportionate donors to lower income earners. We have here a perverted consent of the governed, where one group of governed consents to the seizure by the government of the property of another group of the governed. Obama whips up the sentiments of the masses by demanding the wealthy minority "pay their fair share" when they are already paying millions, and far in excess of the government services they consume.

Looking at all the years the income tax has existed, the top marginal tax rate has been much higher for most of them than it is now.

Not that it could ever happen, but wouldn't it be interesting if... a) the candidates all had to take an IQ test before the election and the results were made public; and b) people's votes were weighted based on their IQ. For example, the number of votes you get is calculated as your IQ divided by 100.

@mickey: the reason dem policies do not work is you want to be mom & dad, financial adviser, doctor, nutitionist, employer & best friend to everyone. See, the idea of our founding fathers was to let the people decide how best to run their personal life. They laid out the foundation, & we the people decide if we want to own or run a business, if we want to work for uncle pete or work for the factory in town, or do we want to have wifey stay home with kids or does she want to work outside the home. Its up to the individual, not up to the big dem government to decide. If i want to eat bon bons or cabbage. My choice, not michelle or bloomberg. Etc. Etc. Thats why dems policies don't work.

@paulsmith - ok thanks for going first. What you are saying is there is a mathematical formula we can employ. Good!! Let's do this. Let's eliminate all pensions for government employees. In NJ, that would save $3 Billion a year in government expense. Viola immediate tax relief!! In DC, it would be 20x that. then we make all union employees join Obamacare. It's only fair they go first. Next we cut all government pay for people over 100k by 10%. Another $10 billion saved. Why should taxpayers pay high taxes for high salaries for bad work and inefficiencies. Next we reduce all Fed spending to 2008 levels. If it worked then and our incomes are down since 2008, why not the government? How easy is that?

Darn I am good!!!

How about we get 75 cents back for every buck to DC- pensions are secondary to me. Small potatoes if we get 75 cents back. Our state finances would then have a SURPLUS and we can cut taxes even though Norquist, McConnell and other welfare queens may be hurting. That's a fact.

Its 20 years the employees have paid 5%-7% of thier salaries ALONE into the pension system.

Using the low end of 5% for 20 years - the "taxpayers" contribution would have been used up in 1997 as per the GAO ( read the Newark Star Ledgers report) when Christie started barking about it!!! Now you want to take my own money away from me? I'll kill ya! try doing

I thought Democrats thought all of wall st was bad news. Have you changed your tune? What about capital gains taxes? If stocks go up, there are more gains taxes right?

If he isn't a divider than why wouldn't he listen to this large voting block that he lost. Does he only care about the voters who supported him or all of us? Bel Air seriously? Obama only won 40% of the white vote. That means 60% did not support him or his polices. I want to know why Obama is ignoring the will of 60% of all white voters?

Obama support from white men fell to 36 percent from 41 in 08 and he still won. That says he won at the expense of what white men support.

I am asking why is he ignoring us. Are we not worthy?

Election results 2012: Who won it for Obama?

"Exit polls find that a key to Obama's victory was winning 93 percent of African-Americans, 71 percent of Hispanics, and 73 percent of Asians. Mitt Romney took most of the white vote, which is 72 percent of the electorate. But it wasn't enough."

Are you saying Obama will ignore whites because he won with the other groups even though the grand total was 50/50? Are we all equal or not is what I want to know? Doesn't look equal.

Glad you brought up what Romney. You all have been saying he only cares about 50% for quite some time and that is a reason not to vote for him. The fact that Obama only cares about 50% which is made up of only 40% whites is even more telling. 60% of whites said Romney was the guy! Obama doesn't care about 60% of white voters.

Was Romney wrong to state what just proved out to be true? Obviously we can all take comments and twist them. Lots of people in the 47% stat which is true by the way (don't pay Fed inc tax) are legit for a lot of reasons. The question is one of fairness. When 25% of payers provide 80% of the money, why do you think that is unfair?

One thing for certain, businesses especially small business will cut down their number of employees because they won't be able to provide healthcare, or they can employ part time employees so employer do not have to worry about paying for your medical insurance. So watch it!

It's okay to get help from the government when uncertainty happens but to abuse it or should I say, taking money from hard working taxpayers just because they think they are entitled to it, then that's unfair and unacceptable.

Also, expanding the government is another taxpayers wasted money that could have been used to create jobs

Alena,
Why is your vision certain? There is a hysteria about this that defies logic. If in 2014 the customer pool for insurance companies goes up by 30 million as the insurance companies themselves say it will, how will prices skyrocket? That thought goes against every economics class taught in the past 50 years... you grow your business buy adding customers, the pool of customers will spread the costs out so the final costs will be lower. Grow too much corn and you have a glut and prices go down, damage the corn and prices go up... you can follow that right? What would keep the prices artificially high unless someone manipulates the market (say silver) and it still auto corrected over time. wheres your basis of reasoning? too many claims? it will be defeated by co pays - most lower classes will opt for higher co pays to keep the initial costs down. so they wont be running ot the doc too much if it takes away from the food table (or drug money if your cynical) .

"@Jimm - Businesses did not grow just because of customers. Employees contributes as well. How about Obamacare? Don't tell me that this was funded with their own money"

Ok I had to repost this answer... Are you a business owner? Customers are job#1, without them there is no business. I've worked in Public sector and Private sector - nobody bought my bosses steel because of Japanese imports... 6 months later I'm unemployed again... any questions? Employees are the production and sales of your product. pay to have good employees and you will have a good product.
Now obamacare is easy - its healthcare that must be bought orthe employee pays a tax. As the owner of the business you don't HAVE to offer healthcare (unless you have +49 employees) - you can let your employees buy from a pool and you reimburse them a part of the costs, or you provide it which gives you cost control and choice, IMHO you would be an idiot to let the employees pick on thier own, so you get to shop for the best price and then offer the deal to your employees. If they refuse it your off the hook and they pay the tax. Not hard at all. If they accept it its just like paying Soc Sec taxes or health care now. you deduct thier co pay from thier check and pay the bill when its due. Your FTP for employees should incude the costs of healthcare and FICA, etc. already so you would know what your costs are pretty closely since the rates cannot go up for twelve months.
Whats the problem?

Washed ashore

11:04 pm on Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Alena-the government needs to borrow $1 trillion now to operate. That's on top of owing $16 trillion. Expanding government means borrowing more money. It can't be done. It shouldn't be done.

When small businesses like me do cut jobs, unemployment will grow. More unemployed means less taxes means less GDP means more borrowing because remember we started $1 trillion in the hole.

When the government invested in Solyndra and it went bankrupt, guess what. Taxpayers are still paying the interest on the money. It wasn't cash capital. It was borrowed money. We are paying interest on a deal that is no longer around. That is less money albeit borrowed that could go to help the poor.

Washed ashore,
Why would you lay off employees unless they are not producing? The FTP of each employee is based on productivity vs hours worked. If you dont have enough work to make them productive then by all means lay them off.
Two - if your laying off because the healthcare that doesnt become mandated til 2014 is too high, arent you jumping the gun a bit? an FTP of 1 is one 40 hour work week by one employee, at my last job the FTP was 1.3 because we couldnt keep enough employees on hand and had to pay O.T.
The O.T. costs were borne out because of training issues and the time to get a new employee on the street was longer than taking one employee at time and a half (with no additional health or insurance costs) and double shifting it. we suffered a steadily rising cost because the overworked employee then took more time off themselves... see the picture? You only hurt your business by shorting yourself and the short term gains are often eaten up by long term losses of productivity.

Our business has a large lead time so I have to budget employee labor costs far in advance as well as capital investments. Smart budgeting requires good forecasting. Our industry is slow now too. I cannot afford to carry all the expense and hope for the best. If business picks up then possibly I can absord some of the costs and will gladly do so. If it doesn't I will not risk the entire company and 40 years of work to hope for the best. Laying off some of my employees doesn't really hurt me at all but it does provide cash flow relief. Between increased taxes medicare, fica, income, payroll costs, insurances of all kinds, raises, increased materials costs, regulations why would I just accept all of this esp in light of the fiscal cliff and tax hikes etc.

Go to Table S4 and look at the spending and deficits. See if anyone can tell us that this path makes any sense.

Total spending 2013-2017 - OBAMA SPENDING = $20.3 T
Total income 2013-2017 = $16.5 T
New deficit added = $3.8T over $900 B a year

How much is the interest cost on a $20 T loan at 3% = $600 B a year. Interest. WOW

No blue state stuck by Obama like New Jersey
Wednesday November 7, 2012, 10:42 PM
BY HERB JACKSON
WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT
The Record
Pages: 1 2 3 > display on one page | Print | E-mail The polls all showed the tidal wave for “change” that carried Barack Obama into the White House in 2008 had ebbed in 2012. The question on Tuesday night was whether it had receded enough to break for Mitt Romney.

Unemployment remained too high. Obama’s stimulus law and health insurance overhaul were toxic in some states. And his campaign went from inspiring voters about the future in 2008 to targeting swing-state voters, warning about the future if Romney won.

But in New Jersey – a state coping with a higher unemployment rate than the national average – Obama saw a slight boost over 2008. It became the only state in the country where Obama won four years ago and garnered even more support this year.

Wise up, folks ...

Everyone runs with some slack (fat) in their organizations. When times are busy, this enables work to be done in a timely manner. When times are bad, they end up doing busywork. I face the same realities ... through I've had to cut out this layer of fat already. For me, it will be cutting into the muscle!

One of my company's largest customers is a military contractor. You would instantly recognize their product if you saw it. They view themselves as in a "life or death" position. Needless to say, I'm heavily discounting the value of their business in 2013!

This is where job loss starts (for people like J.D. Luke and BellairBerdan who are totally clueless)!!!

Remember, that a small business owner gets paid AFTER all of the other costs have been met!!!

Also, if employees have the moxie to start a business, they would do so during good times. I recently had an employee who was clueless about the economy leave to start his own business. He's sucking air and I'm freed of the $150,000 / year of overhead that his salary and benefits cost us!!!

My taxes? Well, I don't pay property tax as it doesn't exist here. My income taxes work out roughly equivalent, and I am not paying anything per month in healthcare. So I'm coming out ahead on the deal.

Complain all you want, the electorates AND people have spoken. I didn't vote for O, to be clear, but the GOP slate was a disaster-is this the best they have? McCain and now Romney? Social media and always-on news via web, smart phones, tablets, iPads, etc., only serve to magnify how out of touch the candidates are, especially, IMHO, the GOP. I have no sour grapes about who won. I just know that progress can't be made without the House and Senate cooperating. These career politicians are risk averse because they know that the velocity of information is so intense that one unpopular vote made by them could ruin their career, forever. So what we have now is what you see-nothing gets done and our standard of living slowly deteriorates. The two party system is failing America.

Funny, my Canadian friends living in the USA always go back to Canada for their health care needs.

Chris Welch, let me correct you. I know many Americans that cannot pay for health care. If they use an emergency room as their primary care they can go bankrupt from the bills because even though someone may not be denied care, they still will be billed. Explain how someone working at Staples for about $12 per hour under 30 hours a week (because they won't be put full time in order to circumvent benefits) can pay over $1000 a month for health insurance?

I have asked my Canadian friends why. They say the care is better and cheaper.

I have a friend who is an associate at a top 5 law firm in NYC. He's from Toronto. Since I met him in 2000, he has repeatedly and emphatically posited that not only is the pay better in the USA, the taxes are better & the health care is better. He has gone on and on about never going back to Canada if he can help it. He's brought his mother HERE for heart surgery & his grandmother here for cancer treatment. Maybe it's because NYC has the greatest doctors in the world or maybe it's because the US has better healthcare in general. He can't know, having never lived anywhere else in the US.

"I also know many Americans that can get no care"
Which of course is false, as you just admitted yourself.
"they use an emergency room as their primary care"

Tech, I am independent and would have no problem voting for a Dem, that was not going to tax me into oblivion, quite frankly I knew from the beginning that putting Romney up against Obama would never fly in the battleground states. Had it been Rubio on the ticket, the outcome would have been very different, no Latinos for Obama. I said the right is going to get even because they know what four more years of Obama’s spending is going to do to this country. It will not be pretty. It is ironic, that “majority” that put Obama back in, people of color, the Latino community and single white women are the ones that have suffered the most for the past four years and probably will for the next four years. You know how to get a job... major in a viable and in-demand field, even if its electrician. The sad truth is we will all be here in 4 years complaining what condition our country is in. I voted for Obama in 2008, but not this year. If people got themselves educated enough to see the damage this President has caused, the waste he has spent, the tax (Obamacare) he has placed on all of us, and we voted for him again, then when we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Since I have traditionally been a democrat, I believed we were the party to bring this country together; however, not anymore. All those who voted this time for the President will have to lie in the bed you created. How can we have allowed such an incompetent President to represent us again? You say that the "republicans finally gave us someone who is successful in getting out of a business slump". Don't we all know by now that Bain managed these slumps by dismantling and outsourcing? And that the vague economic outlines offered by Romney were mathematical impossibilities? Herbert Hoover was a successful businessman, too.

Funny how the Obama haters NEVER mention the role of congress in any of our problems, unless it was in Obama's first two years. Nonsense, all of this "debate." Everyone can make an isolated point about this and that, but the fact of the matter is our constitution stipulates that our government must provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare. Nowhere does it say that the "common" and "general" population should only be white, middle-aged, affluent males. A public forms and re-forms over time. It's time for Americans to acknowledge this and figure out how we're going to uphold the constitution as society changes.

You like most fell into the “Let’s blame Bush because he is the figure head” trap advertised by the Obama and the Democratic Party when he was running in 08. Remember, he is a lawyer by trade and very good a deflecting the truth. What our country just accomplished is to elect a lawyer to get us out of an economic slump. That’s like electing a car mechanic to diagnose sick people in a hospital. We needed someone familiar with business to get us out of an economic collapse, not a legal collapse.

And, you statement about 18-28 year olds; this is what the paper said: Sporting items were the most common cause of injuries among people of all ages. These included bicycles as well as basketball, soccer, football and baseball equipment. So it might be because 18-28 year old are more active where that type of injury is sustained. But, your statement is a typical Republican remark - just say it without supporting facts.

FairLawn soccer mom, I hope you send your kids to private school so I don't have to pay for them. You wouldn't want to let someone else do it, would you?

Nice try on the taking of jobs overseas. Looks like your savior is a bit hypocritical in that area......

President Obama's campaign manager, David Axelrod, was on the Meet the Press show last year and told the host, David Gregory, all he knew about the American electorial demographics and how he was planning his strategy, based on all of those demographics he just talked about.

Axelrod received a cell call from the White House after the show and a presidential aid wanted to know what the hell he thought he was doing by going on Meet the Press show, and giving away all of those stats. and demographics on live TV.
Dosen't he realize that the opposition watches and records that show ????

Axelrod told the presidental aid to take a deep breath and to relax because all of the stats and demographics he had volunteered and had given away were over 10 years old and were totally useless for the upcoming election in 2012 !!!

The Republicans sure were watching that show and wrote down everything he said, and then applied it to their strategy end game for this election !!!

David Axelrod is a genius and worth every dime of the $25 million the Democratic party paid him !!!! (he may even get a bonus)

Entitled - find me one company in the Fortune 1000 or any small business that is not buying something made in China and thus supporting jobs in China.

How about the biggest of them all? Apple? Do they really have to make Iphones and profit $45 billion instead of making them in the US of A?

Federal Spending

2008 - entitlements - $1.7 Trillion
2009 - entitlements - $2.2 Trillion
2010 - entitements - $2.0 Trillion
2011 - entitlements - $2.1 Trillion
2012 - entitlements - $2.1 Trillion

Entitlement spending is $400 Billion a year more now than 2008

If the deficit in 2008 was $460B and is $1 Trillion now and entitlement spending is up $400 B, I wonder what is causing the deficit to explode?

Wait, I got it.....ENTITLEMENT SPENDING!!! Paid for by CHINA
