Bergen County Offering Gun Buyback Program
County offering up to $300 for firearms in April gun buyback
Officials will hold a gun buyback in April at locations across Bergen County, the sheriff's office announced Thursday.
Funded through the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office by seized assets from criminal cases, the program will pay up to $300 for firearms and be offered at 11 houses of worship.
“Gun violence knows no bounds,” Sheriff Michael Saudino said in a statement. “Intentional violence and accidental discharges involving firearms can destroy families and communities. If we can take just one dangerous weapon out of our homes or off our streets, we can make Bergen County a safer place for all residents.”
Firearms experts from the sheriff's office will be on hand April 13 and 14 at the gun collection locations to help visitors complete paperwork and secure the firearms. Officials will also provide complimentary trigger locks and gun safety information.
Compensation will vary based on the type of firearm, the sheriff's office said. Officials will offer $20 for non-operational guns, $80 for rifles and shotguns, $100 for handguns and $300 for automatic assault weapons and machine guns.
The program will be Bergen County's second gun buyback, officials said. In 2010, the sheriff's office netted 708 firearms, including two assault weapons.
"All firearms should be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gun box, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which they are being transported. Ammunition should be transported in a separate container," the sheriff's office advised.
The schedule and list of collection sites is below. For more information, call the sheriff's community outreach unit at 201-336-3540.

Thumb up! They should do this once a month. And if you decide to keep your "weapon", your insurance company should charge you "up the nose" for the added liability.

We have a bunch of ignorant American "citizens" in this country today. More commonly referred to as "sheeple".
What a sad day it is in this nation when Americans no longer care to educate themselves about history and the importance of the 2nd Amendment. They no longer care or care to understand why it was so important to our Founding Fathers that it is placed SECOND on the list of Amendments.
If you're too stupid to see the handwriting on the wall, at least be smart enough to sell your gun privately. You'll get more money for it through a private sale from someone who truly understands why it was so critical that Americans remain an armed society.
When the time comes and they are leading you like sheep to the slaughter, maybe you can buy it back from the individual you sold it to and protect yourself and your loved ones. If you sell to LEO's, it will be destroyed.
Don't think a gov't takeover can't happen here. It already is through multiple violations of every other Amendment we currently have. The Patriot Act, NDAA & CISPA are just a few I can name. Every society where this has happened before was arrogant enough to believe it wouldn't happen to them, as well.

Oh please Cara, stick with Alex Jones' websites instead of visiting Patch. They would appreciate your paranoia there.

Spoken like a true neocon with absolutely zero understanding of history or the Constitution. Like a good sheep educated at the trough of the public education system where altered or obliterated history reigns supreme. You could be the poster child for everything that is wrong with the "system".

Your use of the word "Neocon" leads me to believe you don't even understand what it means. A true Neocon would actually support your absurd viewpoints. I live history my dear, I'm an American as I presume you are.

I agree with you in regards that this will help to get unwanted firearms off of NJ streets and neighbourhoods. But, I do believe gun safety is the key here. Like it or not firearms are embeded in our culture/history and are constantly promoted by all media platforms. In short, they're not going to simply go away. Guns are in one third of U.S. households, whether you own one or not. That's why it's important to educate people on firearm safety and storage.
With that said. If I am not mistaken insurance companies already charge different fees for high risk items. Personally, I feel they make out just fine.

Mike Saudino complained about when Leo Maguire held the very same program. He complained of election year stunts, well guess what - it is election year and Mike Saudino is running for re-election. This polician has no shame.
The program is good, Saudino is a hypocrite.
