Burglar Interrupted: Resident Returns Home To Find Stranger In House

Police are still looking for burglar, who allegedly stole jewelery from a home in the Fardale section of town

Police are looking for a burglar who was interrupted mid-break in at a home in the Fardale section of Mahwah Tuesday afternoon, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said Tuesday night.

At about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, a resident returned to his Dodge Court home to find an “unknown individual, described as possibly a light skinned Hispanic male wearing gloves, suddenly run through the house and exit through rear sliding doors,” Batelli said. He ran through a neighbor’s yard before running out of sight, Batelli said.

The resident heard noises when he entered the home through the garage. The thief is believed to have been on the second floor of the home when the resident got there. Batelli said.

Police said they believe the burglar got in by removing a screen door and climbing through a window.

“Several rooms of the house were ransacked and a yet undetermined amount of jewelry was missing,” Batelli said. MPD, BCPD K-9 unit and BCI units “tracked through rear yards to an adjacent roadway where it is believed a car was parked,” Batelli said.

Police are still investigating this incident, and looking for the runaway burglar, Batelli said.

This is the latest in a string of several residential burglaries across the township that reportedly happened in similar ways.
