For Mahwah residents who remain without power for the fourth day after Hurricane Sandy, a new daytime shelter could provide a much-needed reprieve. The Bradley Center at Ramapo College will be open to residents beginning at 8 a.m. Friday.

According to Mayor Bill Laforet, the township has partnered with the college to offer residents a free place with power to go al day. The facility will be open until 10 p.m.

“Unfortunately, you can’t sleep there, but it is a warm place people can go to to take a shower, or use the bathroom,” Laforet said. “You just need to bring your own toiletries.”

There are also no kitchen facilities at the Bradley Center, but residents are invited to bring in outside food and entertainment sources, and invited to stay at the Center all day.

The college will also have some opportunity for cell phone, laptop and other electronic charging.

To use the center, locals must bring proof of Mahwah residency. The Bradley Center can accomodate about 300 people at a time.

The college has canceled classes until Monday, but has continued to house students since the storm.

The daytime shelter is the second opened in the township since Hurricane Sandy. The American Red Cross is operating a shelter at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute on Campgaw Road.
