Enrollment Numbers Prompt Teacher Hire
Third class section added to drop average class size from 25 to 17
Betsy Ross Elementary School will have one more section of Kindergarten this year, thanks to higher than average enrollment numbers, district officials said at a school board meeting last week.
“We reached a critical breaking point,” in terms of enrollment numbers, Assistant Superintendent Janet Donohue said Wednesday. “We thought better to [add the class] now than wait until the middle of the year to add it.”
Once 50 students enrolled, the school moved to have a third section of Kindergarten, and a new teacher, added.
Susan Pielka, who had previously been working as a long-term sub in the district, was appointed to the position. The job is part-time.
According to last year’s Betsy principal Christine Zimmermann, the three sections of half-day kindergarten will have between 16 and 17 students in each.
“We did what was in the best interest of the kids,” Zimmermann said.
The school is also getting a new interim principal this year. Classes for Kindergarteners through high school seniors start this Wednesday.
