Fire Destroys Pulis Ave Trailer
Officials say cause of trailer fire was likely accidental
A fire that broke out shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday completely destroyed one of the trailer homes in Bogart’s trailer park on Pulis Avenue, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said.
The cause of the fire is unknown, however Batelli said "initial investigation determined that the fire in all likelihood started in or around the utility room" and was "accidental in nature." Assistant Fire Chief Brad Stio said the cause of the fire was "likely a faulty furnace."
One resident who was home at the time the fire broke out smelled and saw smoke, ran out of the trailer, and asked a neighbor to call 911, police said. No one else was inside at the time of the fire and nobody was hurt, Batelli said.
Mahwah Fire Department companies 1-4 were dispatched to fight the blaze, Stio said. A FAST team from Wyckoff, Mahwah Ambulance Co. 4, and the MPD also responded to the scene.
According to Batelli, the trailer is "considered a total loss, and the Township Building official has determined it to be uninhabitable."
Stio said he "can't remember" the last time the township had a fire in a mobile home park. "Typically, these can be very dangerous, because the homes are very close to one another and the fire can easily spread. In this case, we responded quickly, had the fire out fairly quickly, and it was contained to the one trailer," he said.
The fire will undergo an arson investigation, as do all structure fires in the township, Batelli said.
