Firefighters Win 2012 Softball Championship
Team faced one tough match-up in three-game series
A team of firefighters, police officers and EMTs from Mahwah are the Bergen Firemen’s Softball League 2012 champions. According to a release from the department, the Mahwah team won the best of a three-game championship series against Oradell in a two-game sweep.
Saturday night, the team squeaked past the team from Oradell, coming up with a 17-16 win on Oradell’s home turf.
Sunday, Mahwah won its second game 14-6. According to the release, it was an “exciting game filled with awesome hits and playing in the field.” The team “was cheered on by a large crowd of family, friends and fellow firefighters.” The Sunday game was played at Mahwah’s Commodore Perry Field.
The victory comes after weeks of regular season play, in which the Mahwah team accumulated an 8-2 record. Last year, Mahwah fell to Hawthorne in the championship rounds of play.
