Is It Too Early For The Holiday Displays? [POLL]

They are popping up in stores across the area, in some cases months before Christmas and Hanukah

 

Is it too early for the holidays?

It’s the age old question. It’s a week away from Thanksgiving and it seems you can’t walk into a local store without seeing massive displays for Christmas, Hanukah and the other December holidays. Some stores around the area – like the Home Depot on the Mahwah/Ramsey border – had Christmas displays up before Halloween.

Each year, locals complain that the holiday season starts earlier and earlier, possibly forcing us to reach into our pocketbooks more often to pick up decorations, gifts, and holiday foods and desserts.

But, this year, the nearly two-month long holiday season may be a welcome break. With residents recently living through a debilitating hurricane, Nor’easter snowstorm and busy presidential election, a little extended cheer might not be such a bad thing.

While traveling around businesses large and small in Mahwah and Ramsey, Patch has noticed a lot of holiday displays. So, we want to know - do you think it’s too early for the holiday hoopla? Or, is it something that can help the community rebuild this year?

The only stores that should have Holiday materials available that early are craft supply stores i.e. JoAnns and Michaels.

I love Christmas but retail displays have been up in many stores since October. It disgusts me and ruins the feel of the Holiday Season...Thanksgiving is the kick off to the season! It's all about greed. And Black Friday should be on FRIDAY. Not Thanksgiving at 9pm (Target!). It's out of control.

I agree it is out of control. It is called Black Friday. Leave it on Friday, but in fairness it isn't just Target. I had a family member for years that worked at Kmart (in the 80s and 90s) and they were always open on Thanksgiving.

There is a solution to this - stay home and don't shop. Maybe if the retailers lost money on those days, they would take the hint and close. Is it really worth that much to save a few dollars that you can probably find online for the same price?

I agree with KM. No stores should be open on Thanksgiving Day. Its a time for families to be together and enjoy the holiday not make people have to work. Its almost impossible to get families to eat dinner together on a nightly basis can't we at least have a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Friday is early enough to shop.
