'Large Quantity' Of Magic Mushrooms In Mahwah Condo Leads To Five Arrests

Neighbors reported suspicious activity to police, authorities said

Five people were arrested after police found them with a “large quantity” of what officers said were illegal mushrooms in a Mahwah condominium, Chief James Batelli said Friday.

Police were alerted to a condo off of Ridge Road Friday by several complaint calls from neighbors, Batelli said. Neighbors reported seeing what they believed to be illegal substances through the window when passing by, Batelli said.

Officers found psilocybin, a psychedelic compound in mushrooms, Xanax and a small amount of marijuana inside the condo, Batelli said. Some of the psilocybin was “being measured utilizing an electronic scale and Solo cups,” he said.

Police arrested one man who lives in the condo, Frank Denigris, 19, on charges of possession and intent to distribute, Batelli said.

Batelli said police also arrested four others who were in the residence at the time police found the illegal drugs – Ahmed Ghiasi, 19, of Mahwah, Kenneth Major, Jr., 20, of Ramsey, Nahla Hassam, 20, of Paramus, who were all charged with possession and intent to distribute, and Ryan Ansetti, 20 of Mahwah, who was charged with possession.

All five were processed and released, with a future court date set to appear in Mahwah Municipal Court.

What the hell is going on in Mahwah?

While I applaud the exemplary work of Mahwah's Finest... I am extremely concerned with the increase of news alerts involving a drug culture within our community. Very scary when I think about my young sons and their friends playing right outside where these older kids were "allegedly" getting ready for the weekend.

In addition to my beautiful bride...there was a major reason why I moved out of The Bronx. I had enough of the insatiable culture and criminal element surrounding drugs, and now it's right down the block from me again. Not cool.

All I can say is Thank You again to the Cops who busted this ring, and I will continue to focus my sons on the right way to live their lives.

Signed,
A concerned father

James, while it has not made the news in recent years, this is not a new development. It may be a good thing that the public is starting to become aware that there are people in town that every day are distributing drugs among the addicted teens and young adults.

When we are discussing the cost vs. the importance of police officers, traffic stops, youth programs, establishing a rapport with early teens, etc., as well as changes to the township character that attracts more outside influx and creates additional opportunities for this to go on unnoticed - then it's important to understand that this is not some "hypothetical" scenario, but that drug use and the resulting secondary crimes (to finance the habit) are already something the township and schools have been actively combatting for years.

Thank you to Jim Batelli and his officers for apprehending these young people and bringing the situation to the attention of the Mahwah residents. As Andy has said, this has been actively combatted by the schools and township for a long time. I know three of these people and, as a mother, I cannot for the life of me understand why kids would want to go that route knowing of its many dangers!

James....New Milford has a problem with drugs. I have been to the Borough Hall numerous times to tell the police officers what I have seen in my own community. They say they have only 1 or 2 detectives dedicated to narcotics and can't be in all places at all times of the day. Someone is turning a blind eye and it's to bad.....

I will tell you to mind your own business because you have no idea of the truth. You called yourself the piglet not me. Get the real facts before accusing anyone....did it ever occur to you that some innocent person was framed here?? I guess not because of your intelligent level.

Daniel....I won't lower myself to your level, you won't hear from me again. Daniel, do YOU realize that you called your own town of Mahwah "horrible". Police will always pick on kids because they are the ones that stir up the most trouble. You say I have no idea of the truth & perhaps an innocent person is being framed.....Have I hit a nerve? Maybe this "innocent person" is a relative or neighbor of yours??

Oh Daniel, I can't help myself-have to comment. No relative of mine lives in northern Bergen County...(Mahwah) .You say you wouldn't live in New Milford, only Mahwah since it is upper class? I had a job in Mahwah when younger, after leaving a job in Paramus. I was going to leave after a week... the culture shock between Paramus & Mahwah was just to much for me. I think you are contradicting yourself, first you call Mahwah horrible, then you call it upper class...Me thinks it is You who is the angry one and needs to get a life.

For all those who dont live here and defend them you should think about what your going to say and ask yourself how long did this go on? did they drive under the influence of theese drugs? and would you do the same?

20 years old? Not "children" - at that age, some might soon be PARENTS.

By that age I had just completed my military service and had traded my fatigues against Italian suits and was travelling throughout Europe, visiting clients.
Very decidedly NOT a child anymore.

No, these people need to be held responsible for their own actions.

"I work for someone in Mahwah and know the whole story" You seriously gotta stop. I am laughing too hard at all your posts. What is the difference if it was a summons or an arrest? The charges are the same. You are playing a semantical game that has no bearing on the reality of the situation. It says right here: "All five were processed and released, with a future court date set to appear in Mahwah Municipal Court." Is that incorrect? Were they not processed and giving court dates?

Just remember never judge a book by its cover....and until you know the facts leave them alone, were'nt you ever taught to never throw stones and have a little class because you never know what happens to you or your family or friends 5, 10 years down the road...its soo easy to do all the blaming. If you have kids or no kids every body has a past issue ( and i am so sure u do) no one is perfect...but keep picking on these kids because of your miserable lives. Do something mice for someone today not...why be such a hater!!!!!

"Just remember never judge a book by its cover." So we should ignore the FACTS? They were caught with large quantities of mushrooms as well as Xanax and marijuana. Are you disputing that? Sounds pretty cut and dry. Maybe they weren't all involved in the sale of it, but they certainly knew what was going on. "where was the Mahwah police for that?" You are pissed the cops didn't stop an accident? So because the cops didn't stop an accident from happening, they shouldn't have followed up on neighbors' complaints of drug selling in their condo development? LOL. Please keep posting more.

C'mon you bunch of sissies, drugs are everywhere, Mahwah is not special. You sit there in your lily white suburb and applaud the efforts of these fascist cops enforcing archaic laws that destroy lives. Violent criminals deserve to be in jail, these are KIDS who aren't even old enough to have a drink. I guarantee everyone who supports these types of arrests are over entitled, selfish boomers. Give yourselves a round of applause, you vote(d) for the assholes who ruin(ed) this country! Cheers! And to all the cops: get an honest job!

I would go out of my way to support an addict in their effort to beat their addiction.

However, a dealer/distributor is entirely different. These ADULTS are making money out of other people's misery, are actively trying to turn people into addicts to increase their base, and are responsible for the every single crime (petty or violent), committed by each of their client so that they can pay these distributors!

A huge thank you to our police officers for taking every opportunity, no matter how remote, to disrupt these activities in our township.

In my mind, they didn't get arrested because they were selling drugs. They got arrested because they were selling drugs WITH THE WINDOW OPEN. Let's say you don't agree with the law, it's STILL illegal so maybe they should been a little more cautious and they wouldn't have gotten caught. As entertaining as it is reading these guys' friends try to defend them, it's also pretty sad. The only reason your friends got caught wasn't because they were "unlucky" or simply doing or dealing drugs, it's because they are morons doing so with the window open."these fascist cops enforcing archaic laws that destroy lives." but doing drugs and selling them to vulnerable individuals doesn't? "(Only) Violent criminals deserve to be in jail" So Bernie Madoff shouldn't be in jail? "And to all the cops: get an honest job!" As opposed to drug dealing?

My name is John Jackson and I am sorry for calling you sissies. I don't appreciate being taken out of context; I believe that jail exists to house serious threats to society. The drug laws have given the police too much power which may be great for aging boomers but is greatly detrimental to young people. The only highly addictive and lethal drug found was xanax which is legal with a prescription. I'm sure many of you either have xanax scripts or know people that do. Pfizer co makes xanax xr and they also spend a fortune lobbying the U.S government. Neither marijuana nor psilocybin are physically addictive nor are they narcotics in the true sense of the word. The reason I posted in the first place was because I believed that this had been overly sensationalized by all of you here. This was not a drug gang selling narcotics (coke, crack, heroin, meth etc.) and there were no weapons recovered. The argument that they may drive under the influence is fallacious because many more accidents are caused by alcohol. I do not support drug use, I support intelligent legislation and enforcement. Many young adults experiment with marijuana and psilocybin and there is no proof to suggest that this was an organized "drug ring." Finally, the notion that people are robbing to get a psilocybin fix is downright absurd.

well there's the whole people coming and going to that unit and they were high when leaving and you say that them driving under the influence is false and the knowledge of not dealing with crack meth or heorin i had no idea you lived here and not getting close to being a hood ornament it seems you know the story better than i do seeing how i almost got hit and the strong odor of pot coming from the car stop defending them

I'm a 19 year old, living in ramsey, the next town over to mahwah. i've lived here my whole life, and my family before for 200 years. to everyone who says theyre surprised about this in mahwah, let me tell you, don't be. i personally knew 3 of these guys, and they were all good kids. ramsey, mahwah, and all the towns around here all consume a lot of weed, as well as mushrooms, coke, and undereage drinking. it's disturbing how much, but its true. i personally love marijuana, so yeah. bye all.

Stop trolling this story and and watch your kids if your so worried. BTW mushrooms aren't that serious there not "addictive" and most people who take them wouldn't imagine driving. You should be more concerned about the liquor/opiates/benzos in your cabinet than you are about pot and mushrooms. Bunch of idiots in this town...
