Mahwah Fire Department Haz Mat crews cleaned up 20-25 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled from a jackknifed tractor-trailer onto Route 287 North Wednesday night, Assistant Fire Chief Brad Stio said.

“It was an 18-wheeler that was hauling rocks that was involved in the accident, and the driver didn’t suffer any injuries or anything like that,” Stio said. “But the truck was leaking fuel, so our crews stopped the leak, and cleaned up the fuel that had been spilled.” The truck and spilled fuel were removed by a tow truck, Stio said.

The accident occurred at about 9:45 p.m. near mile marker 64, near the Campgaw Road Bridge, Stio said.

Mahwah and state police, as well as fire companies two and four, responded to the scene.

A similar accident happened at Mile Marker 65 on Route 287 at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. "A two-wheel trailer that was being pulled by a truck disconnected and hit a guard rail," Stio said. It did not hit anything, and there were no injuries reported, he said.

Crews cleaned up a "very small amount" of fuel that spilled as a reult of that accident, he said.
