Lightning Strikes Betsy Ross Tree [Reader Photos]
The tree is in the process of being removed, as per school officials' direction
Mahwah DPW crews and Fregmen Brothers contractors were at Betsy Ross Monday morning, removing debris from a tree that area residents say had been struck by lightning during thunderstorms last Friday.
According to Mahwah schools Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Scot VanDemark, the tree did not cause any damage to the school building when it was struck. But, "as it is either dead or dying, it needs to be removed," he said.
DPW director Keith Hallissey said the tree is going to be scheduled for complete removal in the "near future. [Monday] our crews removed the broken branches on the ground and those that were hanging in the tree itself."
The DPW also removed another tree that had been "completely knocked down," in Friday's storm, Hallissey said.
Patch reader Andrea J. Kelly took photos of the damaged tree and clean-up Monday, and submitted them to Patch.
