Mahwah Baseball Coach Celebrates 100th Win

Coach Jeff Remo says the moment was made even more special by his son, a player who secured Wednesday night's win for the team

For Mahwah Varsity Baseball Coach Jeff Remo, every win is important. This Wednesday, his team not only celebrated a game victory against Fort Lee, but a milestone in their coach’s career.

The 13-1 win against the Bridgemen marked Remo’s 100th career win as a baseball coach. Remo also recorded over 100 wins with the Mahwah Softball team when he coached that.

“I don’t think you go into coaching with a specific goal of wanting to win a certain number of games,” he told Patch Thursday. “But, when you look back [at your coaching career], it’s definitely an accomplishment.”

His 100th win was a family affair. Remo’s son, sophomore Ryan, was the closing pitcher during the Fort Lee game.

“My son was the winning pitcher, that made it even more neat,” he said.

Remo said his strategy over the last five-and-a-half years coaching the team has been to take coaching one game at a time, and one season at a time. He credits the quality of his players and the team’s pitching coach Doug Cinnella with his winning record.

“I am coaching great kids. I will do it forever if I keep getting kids like this,” Remo, who coached the team to a state sectional win in 2008 and state championship title last year, said.

“They are great players and all around just really good kids.”

Mahwah Schools Athletic Director Roger Pelletier commended Remo’s coaching style and congratulated him Thursday on the milestone win.

“As far as his coaching style, Coach Remo sets the highest expectations for every player and staff member in the program,” Pelletier said.

“This team and group of players works as hard as any team in the county. Even coming off a state championship in 2012, they take nothing for granted, they don't cut corners, they are meticulous in practice and try to get better every single day.  Any true baseball fan would love to watch how this group of coaches and players practice and play this game.”
