Mahwah Brownies Combat 'Indoor Recess Boredom'
Girls organized a toy drive to achieve their Brownie Quest award
Girl Scout Brownie Troop 4039 recently completed their "It's Your World, Change It" Brownie Quest. As part of their Journey, the girls earned four awards:
- The Discover Key – To earn this award, each Girl Scout Brownie will discover herself and her values—as a Girl Scout and a member of her family.
- The Connect Key – To earn this award, each Girl Scout Brownie will connect as a member of a Brownie Team, with her family on a healthy-living activity, and, as a group with their community to increase healthy-living opportunities
- The Take Action Key – To earn this award, Girl Scout Brownies will team up to identify a community place where the team can Take Action. Then they join together to make a plan to Take Action and carry out their Take Action Project to improve their world.
The girls brainstormed and finally decided that the Take Action Project they wanted to work on, involved helping their Mahwah elementary school eliminate indoor recess boredom.
They met with their principal, explained that many of the games and toys their school already had, were broken or missing pieces. Together, they decided to hold a toy drive. Once approved by the school and the HSO, a flyer was email blasted home. As donations came in, they were taken home to make sure all the pieces were included in the boxes, and that the games, etc. were clean. Then, they were brought back into school and put on the rolling carts used for indoor recess. Now, when it rains or it is too cold for the students to go outside, they have more things to keep them entertained.
- The Brownie Quest Award – At the end of the Quest, the girls also earn the journey's culminating award, the master lock that needs all three of their keys in order to open. Through this award, the Brownies will see that, together, their three keys—Discover, Connect, and Take Action—unlock the meaning of leadership.
The girls will receive their awards during a private court of awards ceremony in late March.
Congratulations to Girl Scout Brownie Troop 4039, from their leaders - Sue Reardon and Stacey Sandler - for a job well done!
