The Mahwah Fire Department is asking residents to collect non-perishable food items, warm clothing and blankets, cleaning products, pet food, utility equipment like work gloves and other items to donate to residents at the Jersey Shore recovering from Hurricane Sandy.
Mahwah’s Fire Department has partnered with a local business – Ridgewood Moving Services – and a local group – the Mahwah Elves – to collect items to donate to Sandy victims in New Jersey. Items collected by the FD will be dropped off to Ridgewood Moving for transport to the Jersey Shore.
Donations will also go to Little Ferry, Moonachie and food will help restock the shelves of the Center for Food Action.
According to Elf Suzy Godding, new clothing and blankets (not used), new socks, hand sanatizer, and cleaning supplies are all needed.
Residents can drop off donations to any of the township’s five fire houses Wednesdays. During the day, items can be dropped off in front of the fire houses. From 7:30 – 10 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters will be on hand to collect donations.
Donaters can also drop goods off to Ridgewood Moving on Corporate Drive.

Jessica - in light of the fire in Society Hill, if there are any needs of the families displaced, we will help them out too. Not only the homes that were on fire, but neighboring homes with water/smoke damage. Thanks!

Sounds great, Suzy! I know you were there today. The Plant Church was also there, getting the responders and residents some food donated by the Mahwah Bar & Grill. As usual, Mahwah is there for its neighbors in need.

Are any items being given out in Mahwah or is everything being sent to the shore? My Mom lives in Manahawkin and lost everything. I live in Mahwah and it would be easier for me to pick up a couple of items, then it would be for her. Please let me know. We've gotten a few sweats and a coat so far. Thank you for what you are all doing for those in need

Hi Jim -- Yes, the Elves are a group of volunteers in Mahwah. They formed after Irene last year and helped a lot of people in town clean out and rebuild. They got right back to work during Sandy. Patricia, she's 76 years old and wears size 14-16. Thank you for asking. We're heading back to Manahawkin tomorrow as her house is being gutted, and we will be back Saturday

Hi Sandy - the donations we are accepting are going to all different locations in NJ and to the people in Mahwah who lost everything in the Society Hill fire. I hope all goes well in Manahawkin - I love that town, my in-laws have a shore house there and we have so many great memories from it. Luckily it's not their primary residence as they had damage. Please let me know if you find any donation places in Manahawkin - I like to keep a list of all places!

Thank you Maria. We were blessed with clothing from my friends/coworkers this morning. But thank you for the offer. Suzy, unfortunately this is her primary residence & she still works so she needs to find a place to live down there. Thanks again!!

You are welcome. My mom is in the same age range. I am sure you know this, FEMA is offering rental assistance if she does not have have flood insurance.

FEMA is helping but there are so many in need it is difficult. No one is allowed on LBI and there is one hotel that is full in Manahawkin. Therefore they're having to send people to Atlantic City. My Mom is a bus aide for the elementary school and she has a few hours in between runs, so going back & forth to AC would be a little difficult for her
