T-Birds Summer Tourney Win Good Precursor To Football Season
The Mahwah High School team is gearing up for a better season than last
Mahwah High School’s football team is walking into its fall season the right way. This week, 15 of the team’s skill players won first place in the 2012 Summer Shoot Out Tournament held at Dover High School.
“There were 20 teams in the tournament, and we won the whole thing,” Coach Jeff Remo said. “That’s pretty impressive.” The T-Birds beat teams from nearby schools like Fair Lawn, Paramus, Indian Hills, Hasbrouck Heights, New Brunswick and DePaul Catholic.
“The kids just played well,” Remo said. “It’s a great warm up going into the season. Now, they can come into camp with a positive attitude.” Training camp preparation for the fall season, he said, starts August 13.
In last year’s summer tournament, the team finished in the Final Four round. It also finished the 2011 regular season with a 6-4 record. Remo said he feels the team is in a position to do better this year.
“I definitely believe we can improve on [last year’s] record,” he said. “Our goals are always the same - to win the league championship, and to make it to Giants Stadium and win the state championship. So, that’s what we are going to try to do again this year.”
It’s been a few years since the Thunderbirds won a league championship, and the team hasn’t clinched a state title since the 1980’s. But, Remo called the summer tournament win a “good start.”
The players in the tournament were Zach Herrmann, Robert Askew, Mike Hogan, Eric Wong, Greg Rozar, Chris Rocca, Justin Taylor, Brad Stiles, Ryan Remo, John Slute, Matt Colucci, Jarius Paul, John Davis, Shawn Doran and Jared Kaplan.
