Mahwah Police Looking For Man Who Allegedly Robbed Gas Station Attendant

Strong-arm robbery described by Valero attendant

The Mahwah Police are investigating a “strong arm robbery” that occurred at the Route 17 North Valero gas station around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, Chief James Batelli said.

A yet undetermined amount of money was allegedly stolen from a gas station attendant during an early morning transaction, Batelli said. According to police, a man driving a black BMW sedan with a New York license plate allegedly stole a wad of money from the gas station attendant after an argument about the cost to fill up his car.

The driver allegedly paid for a fill-up, but got out of his car to argue with the attendant over a payment discrepancy, police said. “When the attendant took a roll of money out of his pocket to show the suspect what he had received [as payment] the suspect grabbed the money, returned to his vehicle and drove off onto Route 17 North,” Batelli said.

No weapons were shown during the robbery, police said.

According to Batelli, only a portion of the vehicle’s license plate was written down, so Mahwah detectives are reviewing surveillance video from the gas station. An audit will be completed to determine the total amount of money stolen, he said.

This is what happens when a Pilot Gas Station is opened...oh wait sorry it was the place of the guy who did not want the Pilot and funded a legal effort to make sure he did not have competition. Uh I mean this is what will happen when a mall is built. I bet you this guy came straight from Paramus at 4am just to use our emergency service resources. Darn mall rat.

Kevin, I'm sure you've already noticed since you are one of the more frequent commenters, but how often do you NOT see something in the Patch about noteworthy police activity in Mahwah? It's my observation that the other towns around us don't provide daily updates as frequently as Mahwah so in truth there is "no activity" to report because it has already been reported. I think the Patch's coverage of a story provides far more details than a 2 to 3 line press release published once a week.

I agree with Kev on this one, yet also with TB148. The sole reason we're now well-versed is mainly via Jessica's efforts. These "No activity" postings have long been around in our "shopper papers," and only a few towns take this easy way out. I do feel, however, it's not our Chief's fault.

T-Bird 148 I am glad these stores are placed here however only a small portion of residents see them. The elderly may think all is well here in Mahwah. The police do a fine job and Im proud to live in Mahwah.I spoke with an individual at the local paper who runs the blotter section. She stated it is up to each dept to call and supply the information to the paper. They do not call seeking information. So I would like more reported to the paper for the people who do not access the use of MahwahPatch. Mr. Kupchik is right Jessica and her efforts are why these stories are here. I am glad the information is coming out somewhere it is important for all the residents to know what is happening in our town

This is definitely an unfortunate event. Mahwah PD is an excellent group of officers who truly make a difference. Still, this should be an indication that NJ citizens should have the right to pump their own gas. It's pathetic how in 2012, there are 2 states that forbid its citizens to pump their own gas.

Mike, you are so right. When I moved to NJ, I got out to pump my gas only to be scolded by the attendant. Now I have to sit in my car while the attendant thinks about when to come to my car. Would someone from NJ please explain to me why in 2012 we can't pump our own? And why I am told " this will never change?"

Nope, sorry I checked and the "right to pump your own gas" is not contained in the US or State Constitution. ;)
