Mahwah's 'Angels in the Outfield' Hosting Sports Equipment Drive

A Mahwah High School sophomore is leading the collection of bats, cleats, gloves and helmets this year

Angels in the Outfield of Mahwah will be conducting its fourth annual baseball equipment drive, which donates new and gently-used baseball equipment to needy young athletes in the New Jersey area. Mahwah High School ballplayer and Sophomore Shane Curry is at the helm of the effort this year.

Angels in the Outfield will be collecting bats, balls, cleats, baseball clothing, catcher's equipment, gloves, helmets, practice equipment, bags, bases and anything else a ballplayer can use.

The charity is a family project. His older brother Ian started collecting the equipment 4 years ago, then Shane joined in. Mahwah ballplayer Brandon Cowen also helped out as part of his Bar Mitzvah project. Since Ian is at college now, Shane will be doing the collecting.

"We are donating this year to the city of Paterson. They have 800 young ballplayers and said they could really use some help giving those players what they need to learn and play," Shane said. "However, if you know a child who needs something, we will gladly give to anyone in need if we have what they need. We have learned to match the specific need with the right equipment."

Angels in the Outfield has brought hundreds of items since its inception to both the Washington Park Little League and Pershing Field Little Leagues of Jersey City as well as families in the area.

There will be a collection box at 15 Pierson Court Mahwah, NJ. If you do drop off equipment please leave a name so the Curry family can thank you.  You can also arrange for a pickup at your home.

Call 201-961-2437 or email ShaneCurry@optonline.net. Monetary donations are also welcome. Deadline for collections is April 12, because the kids need the equipment for this season.
