Meet Township Council Candidates Wednesday

The first of the Mahwah Library Board of Trustees' second annual ‘Meet the Candidates’ nights is Wednesday. The event will feature the council candidates running for three open seats. Residents can meet the candidates running for mayor at the seond installment of the 'Meet the Candidates Night,' next week.

According to a release sent out by the library board, the candidates will have three minutes to introduce themselves, then five minutes each to respond to questions posed by local members of the media, including Patch editor Jessica Mazzola, who will act as the evening’s moderators. The questions were pre-selected from those submitted to the library board by Mahwah residents.

Unlike at last year’s ‘Meet the Candidates Night,’ those running for office will not know the questions beforehand.

“No questions will be entertained from the audience and there will no debating between the candidates. This 'Meet the Candidates Night' is meant to be just that, an opportunity for the electorate of Mahwah to meet the candidates and hear their positions on relevant local issues,” the release said.

According to Library Board of Trustees President Curtis Koster, “we wanted to hold another ‘Meet the Candidates’ night because last year’s was very well attended. We had over 300 people, and a lot of positive feedback.”

This year, he said the board decided to split the event into two nights because of the number of candidates running.

Wednesday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mahwah Senior Center residents can meet town council candidates Lisa DiGiulio, Jonathan Marcus, John Roth, and Steve Sbarra. Library board members said candidate Todd VanDuren was invited, but will not be able to attend due to a scheduling conflict.

And, mark your calendars for next week. On Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mahwah Senior Center, residents can meet mayoral candidates William Laforet and Ed Sinclair.
