Next Year’s School Calendar Includes 23 Days Off
Mahwah's calendar includes a shorter February break and the second day of school off
The 2013-14 school calendar in Mahwah includes an early start date, eight-day Holiday Recess, six-day Spring Recess, and allows for four snow days.
The Mahwah School District posted next year’s school calendar on its website after the schedule was approved by the Board of Education at a recent meeting.
Major features of the calendar include:
- The first day for students is Wednesday, Sept. 4. The next day, kids are off for Rosh Hashanah, then they return to school on Friday.
- February break during President’s weekend is two days long. District officials commented that parents, students and teachers in the district were not upset this year when the originally-planned week-long February break was cut short after Hurricane Sandy, so they decided to include a two-day break next year.
- Students are off on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
- The last day of school, and high school graduation, will be Thursday, June 19.
- The calendar allows for four snow days. Any additional days used will be taken away from Spring Break.

I agree whole heartily on this schedule. Kids are off from school to much in this country. That's why we are so far behind on the world leader board of education.

I don't agree with scheduling half days of school. If we're only sending kids to school on 180 days to meet the absolute minimum, then at LEAST make the FULL days.
If they want to schedule necessar7 staff development and other time for the teachers, then completely close school on that day (for pupils) instead of counting it the few hours and shortened classes as a if it was a "full" school day.
The ONLY time that there should be a "short" school day is in response to weather or other emergencies.
