North Carolina Men Arrested On Cocaine, Gun Possession Charges
One man had a warrant out for his arrest, police say
Mahwah Police arrested two North Carolina men on cocaine, marijuana and illegal gun possession charges after a motor vehicle stop early Monday morning, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said.
Shawn A. McNeil, 25, and Antoine D. McMillan, 22, both of Fayetteville, NC, were arrested on cocaine possession with an intent to distribute and marijuana possession charges, Batelli said. McNeil also had an active warrant out for his arrest from North Carolina for aggravated assault and weapons possession, Batelli said.
After a search of their vehicle, police found a loaded .380 semi-automatic handgun that had been reported stolen in North Carolina, Batelli said. The two were charged with unlawful possession of the gun, possession of stolen property and other related charges, Batelli said.
The duo was originally pulled over for speeding on Route 17 South near Route 287, police said. They were driving a rented 2012 Nissan Murano when they were pulled over, at around 2:30 a.m. Monday by Officer Richard Albro, Batelli said.
When talking with the drivers, “Albro immediately detected a strong odor of raw marijuana,” and “was able to see small leafy chunks,” of the drug in the passenger compartment, Batelli said.
Police also found a “small scale” with a “white powdery substance believed to be cocaine” in the car, Batelli said.
McNeil and McMillion have “extensive” criminal records that include “offenses such as vehicle burglary, possession of stolen property…assault,” and other charges, Batelli said.
Mahwah Police Officers Albro and Timothy Letavish, Lt. Philip Tangel, and K-9 Team Officer Rob Rapp and Dome responded to and investigated this incident.
McNeil and McMillan were remanded to the Bergen County Jail, police said. Bail was set at $250,000.

Thank you officers for your vigilance.
With these traffic stops we are getting our money's worth - because it allows our police department to net the bad guys, getting off our streets and keeping another one out of our town.

To save time I think the phrase is "wait until the mall comes....the police will have their hands full" is used so much it should be assigned a number. I will assign it # 1
Then the reply " There will be no problem when the mall comes" get's a #2

Hank, are you saying that with the addition of a mall, there will be no new burden on our town's police department?

I don't see any burden at the other local malls like Interstate,Ramsey Square etc.
What is this burden?
Every summer Mahwah has plenty of out of towners, coming to our parks, coolers full of cheap beer, some drugs here and there and the usual broken or twisted ankle up some crazy path in the woods. There are search parties for lost hikers etc.
I say the parks are more of a burden on our police/fire and ambulance than any mall.
Also if you listen to the scanner Ramapo College has the worst fire alarm system in the county. There are false alarms after false alarms. Ramapo is not a burden though.

We are becoming very popular in Bergen County. This is Mahwah's 15 minutes of fame. I wonder if other towns get the same type of news. These criminals should know that there is a nice shortcut around the tough Mahwah cops if they turn and get into the Garden State Pkwy around the Paramus area to avoid us. Maybe we can put a sign up in Rt 17 Paramus that says "This way to avoid gettin busted."

I commend our police department for all that they do. It is getting rough out there. Maybe it always has been but now with the up to the minute reporting by Mahwah Patch we know what is going on. Thank you to all of the officers on our force for providing us with a safety net 24/7.
