Couple Charged With Stealing Jewelry From Miller Road Home

Motor vehicle stop led to arrest on charges from burglary that occurred several weeks ago, police said

A Mahwah couple was arrested Wednesday after Mahwah police found stolen jewelry in their pick-up truck during a traffic stop, Police Chief James Batelli said.

Frank E. Funiciello, 26, of Ramapo Valley Road, and Amanda Breslin, 26, of Oxford Court, who police identified as boyfriend and girlfriend, were charged with burglary and theft after police found 33 items – mostly rings, other pieces of jewelry, silver spoons and antique silver forks – in Breslin’s Chevy Silverado, Batelli said.

Police pulled the duo over for running a stop sign on Mountainside Ave., Batelli said. Officers Daniel Stewart and Jonathan Weber searched the car after smelling an odor of burnt marijuana, police said. The officers found the items, and recognized the jewelry as “possibly being the proceeds of a burglary that occurred a few weeks earlier,” on Miller Road in Mahwah, Batelli said.

The victim of the burglary identified some of the jewelry, Batelli said.

“A teletype of the unidentified pieces of jewelry and other items found in their possession was sent to other law enforcement agencies in an effort to determine the owner,” Batelli said.

The pair are scheduled make their first appearance in municipal court on March 13.

Class act by our officers.

And, classic result of the "harmless" marijuana: eventually the addict runs out of legitimately earned cash and finds violent ways to fund their addiction.

Keep the traffic stops up - it's a sure way to nap all kind of perps.

PS: Oxford Court - isn't that the same street/neighborhood/condo development of the robbery and drug-bust earlier this year? Ouch!

The stupid in this post is way more "harmful" then marijuana. I suppose if they stole jewlery to fund thier video game addicitions you would attack video games and not the moral character of the idiots in question! Stay dumb andy.

Has nothing to with morality - but that some stuff is objectively BAD for most normally developed people on a physiological level. I'm certainly NOT advocating to give the perps a free pass - after all no one forced them to take the first step.

But, if you knew of a few cases right here in town and knew the kids involved, they were bright, ambituous, high-achievers, well mannered, absolutely trust-worthy - the kind of kids every parents wishes for themselves -- until they got caught in the web and started the downward spiral.

No - morality has nothing to do with it. Addiction is a chemical process in the brain, where the drug is causing a desensibalizing effect so that with each use, the brain is sensing less of the chemical reward - and thus urges the need to use increasingly higher doses and more frequently.

If you've ever been starving bad, to the point that you felt sick to your stomach, and yet could not get anything to eat for a few hours - now imagine feeling starved like that day in, day out, getting worse every day, wearing you down mentally. Eventually you get to the point that any inhibitions are thrown out and you just HAVE to "feed" yourself, no matter how and where and with what... maybe then you can relate to an addicted person and have a more informed position on this matter.

Great job officers!! Maybe, just maybe, this will be a rude awakening for these two. I remember them very well as Mahwah High School students!

I Would also like to pat the officers on the back for the fine job they did. It didn't take too Long for them to catch the culprits and they did so in a truly professional fashion.
Kudos Mahwah PD. keep up the great work!

They should build the mall right away so people have jobs and won't resort to stealing

Unfortunately in a situation like this everyone loses..The families that have been robbed, the addicts themselves and the families of these addicts..This is an area i have a little experience as i have been both an addict and a victim.. The one area people dont have a clue about is what the families of the addicts go thru..You see way before they are stealing from you they are stealing from where its easiest-Their close family and friends..So i feel sorry for those innocent people who have to struggle thru this difficult time on a road to recovery for their family member who will struggle thru rehabilitation..And by all means i am not taking anything away from the people who have been robbed, im just trying to shed a little light on a area few people know about as i do..I guess thats how they got that saying "we mock what it is we dont understand".

While I agree with all of the comments that have been made, the sad part of all of this is that these two young adults who have not grown up yet need HELP. Drugs does this to most people who are addicted. I do feel for all of the victims who have been affected by these two and their families but hopefully this will be a wakeup call for them and all of the other Mahwah children and young adults who get involved in drugs. The reality of this whole situation is that this is not an isolated incident in Mahwah. Drugs have been rampert not only here but throught the region. Dispite the great work of the DARE program, our children are still falling prey to this deadly diseace of drugs. I pray for all those involved and those who will continue to be effected by all of this in our town.

Why does everyone think crime in Mahwah is so shocking. Mahwah is not some cute little town in Bergen County. It is all Corporate business and gas stations on Rt. 17 with massive amounts of tracker trailers. Nothing pretty about Mahwah anymore. Might as well just go ahead and build the mall and completely ruin it.
