Police Looking For Suspect In Late Night Stabbing

Man was transported to the hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds while trying to break up a large fight, police said

Mahwah police officers are still looking for a man who allegedly stabbed at least one person during a large fight Saturday night in the Ramapo Brae condominium complex off of Stag Hill Road in Mahwah, Police Chief James Batelli said Sunday afternoon.

According to Batelli, police were called to the 800 block of Ramapo Brae Lane shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, where they found a “gathering of approximately 40 individuals” outside.

Inside one of the housing units, police found a man with “stab wounds to his face, arms, and a one-and-a-half inch puncture wound to his abdomen,” Batelli said.

Police also found a teenage boy outside who was having difficulty breathing and whose clothes “had been slashed by a knife,” Batelli said.

The stabbed man was treated by Mahwah Ambulance Corps members and Valley Hospital paramedics and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. The boy was given oxygen and refused further medical attention, Batelli said.

Both victims said they were attempting to break up a large fight that had broken out in the complex, police said. The man is not believed to be the “intended target” of the stabbing, Batelli said.

The man “stated he was stabbed by one of the participants who had subsequently fled the scene in his vehicle,” Batelli said.

Police said they put out an alert for the suspect’s vehicle, and are still looking for him, and investigating the fight. “Area residents were interviewed, but provided little additional information, and it is unclear what started the fight,” Batelli said.

The ongoing investigation is being led by Mahwah Detective Kevin Hebert. Police “are working to identify the participants in the altercation and those who fled the scene along with the suspect,” Batelli said.

Mahwah police were assisted by patrol units from the Bergen County Police, and Ramsey and Upper Saddle River Police, Batelli said.
