Police: Three Arrested After Fight In Fardale
Police say more charges are possible as the investigation continues
Three men were arrested on assault and weapons charges Wednesday night, after a fight that appeared to have started over a borrowed money issue, according to Police Chief James Batelli.
According to police, five adults and one minor were involved in the altercation, which occurred at a home in the Fardale section of Mahwah.
Cliffside Park brothers Moustafa and Mohamed Omar, ages 21 and 23, were charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, after police said they showed up at the Forest Road home of Gregory Canova Jr., allegedly to confront Canova and another man about a money issue.
The Omar brothers allegedly arrived at Canova's home armed with a "broomstick and a knife," and the men became involved in a physical altercation, Batelli said.
The fight also injured a minor at the house, Batelli said.
The brothers allegedly left the house after the incident, but Canova Sr. allegedly called police to report a "home invasion," and requested an ambulance for the injured minor, Batelli said.
Police arrived at the scene and found various weapons believed to have been used in the fight, including a knife, a golf club, and a broken wooden handle, Batelli said. The minor - a juvenile male - was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he later was treated.
The Omar brothers were arrested by Cliffside Park police later in the evening, Batelli said, and their car - which contained blood stains - was impounded.
In addition to the Omar brothers, Canova Jr. was charged with possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful use, and simple assault, Batelli said.
Complaints will also be filed against the male juvenile involved in the altercation, Batelli said.
More charges are possible as police continue to investigate the incident, Batelli said.
