Police: 10 Arrested After Weekend DWI Checkpoint
Police say residents should expect more DWI patrols during the holiday season
Ten people were arrested after a DWI checkpoint that was set up on Ramapo Valley Road over the weekend, according to a release sent out by Lt. Scott Cherven.
The checkpoint, which was set up late Friday night into early Saturday morning, “resulted in four adults arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, five adults charged for drug possession and one adult arrested for an active warrant,” the release said.
According to police, the checkpoint also led to an open container citation and “39 summonses for various motor vehicle violations.”

“These results clearly show that this checkpoint was effective in removing dangerous drivers from our roads,” Police Chief James Batelli said in the release. “We are committed to continuing our efforts in making the roads safer. If we can keep people from driving drunk just by the presence of these checkpoints, then we have accomplished our mission.”
The MPD, which points out that drunk drivers claim the lives of about 12,000 victims across the country each year, according to Division of Highway Traffic Safety statistics, worked with the Bergen County Prosecutors Office in coordinating the checkpoint. The Police Department says it will “conduct several more DWI Road Checkpoints and DWI patrols during the upcoming holiday season.”
