Poll: Should Mahwah Students Have a Week Off in February?
President’s week was cut down to two days thanks to Sandy, and school officials say the same two-day break schedule will likely be a part of next year’s school calendar
The original 2012-13 school calendar had Mahwah kids off for a whole week beginning Monday. Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, that break was cut short, and kids will now be back in school on Wednesday.
At a recent Board of Education meeting, Assistant Superintendent Janet Donohue said the proposed school calendar for next year nixes the weeklong February break from the get go.
“We found that [teachers, students and parents] weren’t too upset to see it go this year,” she said.
Though the 2013-14 school calendar has not yet been finalized, kids will likely have a repeat of this year’s Sandy-fied schedule, in terms of the February break.
So, Patch wants to know, what would you prefer? Think Mahwah students should get the whole week off, or is it kind of a waste? Should the President’s Day break be shorter, and kids have off other days throughout the year?

I think the week is very beneficial as it allows to schools to be fully cleaned considering all the illness that runs through them in the winter. Winter days are shorter and it psychologically affects everyone. it would also be nice to allow families vacation time when they are not in the hectic period of spring outdoor sports. Also, if it snows those days are not a loss to education and the allotted snow days.

Ramsey Board of Education has had only one or two days off during February for "February Break" for years now. A lot of other school districts do it that way also. I think Mahwah is probably the last to get on board with the short February break.

I think it is fine to cut February break. However, according to the 2013/2014 calendar, schools open on Wednesday, September 4 and are closed the very next day for a religious holiday and then back in again on Friday, September 6. Strange scheduling!!
