The "YouTube Famous" Mahwah Marine 1 - used to rescue dozens of residents during Hurricane Irene

Residents from across the township enjoyed free ice cream, and the chance to check out Mahwah's fire trucks, at a fundraiser at Dairy Queen Wednesday that benefited Fire Company 1.

The FD is set for round 2 of the fundraiser next Wednesday at DQ from 6 - 9 p.m. Firefighters will be selling Super 50/50 raffle tickets and promoting their upcoming Pasta Night fundraiser, which happens in October. Anyone who purchases a $5 raffle ticket will get a free scoop of ice cream from DQ.

Families can also expect to see a live demonstration of Company 1's specialized rescue equipment cut up a car.

The firefighters who were there did a wonderful job explaining equipment and technique, and patiently dealt with the questions from curious kids and adults. The gentlemen looking after the boat was full of information and fascinating details.
Thank you for a fun evening - and thank you for DQ for supporting this event.

Mahwah Fire Rescue Company 1

One of the unheralded joys of volunteering is that you learn a lot. In NJ there is no difference in the training between volunteers and paid fire fighters. We all go to the same academy, take the same classes and pass the same state exam. In Mahwah each fire company has an extra specialty. In Company One our specialty is Rescue. This includes all aspects of Rescue including Heavy Rescue (car accidents, collapses, trapped individuals that requires tools to extricate), Water Rescue (dive team, swift water), elevator rescue, confined space rescue and assisting the EMS squads with removing patients. To be certified for each kind of rescue requires hundreds of hours of academy training, classes and testing. To do this you have to love it. Please come next Wednesday when we demonstrate our Heavy Rescue tools. The boat will be back too. If anyone is interested in seeing our boat and the members of Company 1 working last year during Hurricane Irene please check out this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSlpPV0MeH4
