Wednesday Blaze Renders Stag Hill Home 'Total Loss'
Fire likely started near a wood-burning stove, officials said
A two-story, wood-frame home at the top of Stag Hill Road is considered a total loss after firefighters from Mahwah and surrounding towns fought the fully involved structure fire that broke out in it Wednesday night, Police Chief James Batelli said.
According to police, a woman and her three kids were in their Mountain Road home Wednesday evening when the woman went outside to gather wood for wood-burning stove. When she returned to the house, she noticed a large fire inside, and got her three children out of the house, authorities said. Everyone was evacuated safely.
All five fire companies from Mahwah and crews from Franklin Lakes and Hillburn fought the fire for hours Wednesday.
Fighting the fire was complicated by the cold temperature and the lack of fire hydrants in the area, Batelli said. The FD used tanker trucks to supply water to the fire, officials said.
Police investigators are on scene to determine the cause of the blaze, officials said. Though Batelli said the cause the the fire is still unknown, he said a preliminary investigation by Mahwah Police Fire Investigator Michael Blondin determined the fire broke out near the wood-burning stove.

This is such a tragedy. This is a great family and to have this happen especially right after the holidays is unimaginable. Hopefully there is a way for the community to pull together to help this family out with whatever they may need.

The FD is starting a clothing collection. Currently a donation box has been set up by the South entrance of MFD Co 1 at 100 Miller Rd. (next to shared parking lot with Police Station) The clothes are needed for a girl (approx 7 years old) and 2 boys (approx 9 and 12). Obviously winter clothes are immediately needed. As we understand what else is needed we will post on the Patch.

Anyone of facebook is welcome to request an add onto Mahwah Elves - there is info for donations and sizing for clothing. Everyone is pulling together to help this family - they are great people and this is a horrible thing to have happened to them, they have lost everything. They were lucky they escaped this fire!

Can anyone confirm the sizes of the items needed? I saw on Facebook the mother is a L/XL, Father L, sons are 14/16 and daughter 16. Please confirm if anyone knows the family, I live in Mahwah and really want to help them. My heart breaks for this family, especially right after the holidays. I am going to do my best to collect as much as I possibly can for these people. Thank God they are safe but I can't even imagine losing everything I have, I pray we can come together as a community and help this family.

I called Play N Trade today and they told me that they already donated an Xbox, games and some other items. I also have a call into GameStop (the store and corp) to see if we can get another Xbox more games and the turtle Beats headphones (replacing what they got for Christmas). I know both boys had an xbox and all 3 kids had iPads. They will need televisions for the games...any suggestions or anyone with "connections" please let me know! Hang in there Roger, Becky and the kids...We love you and we are here for you! Xoxo

I read no more clothes are needed, but I have a 13 years old boy that actually grew out of a winter jacket and some clothes, good clothes looking like new. I don't want to through them away. It'll be excellent for the younger boy. I also have a $25 gift card that got for Xmas and would like to give it to them. I am new living in the Mahwah community, and don't know where the fire dept. is. Can someone direct me please.

Nani - you have a number of options:
a) All day Saturday, Mahwah Wrestling is hosting an event at Ramapo Ridge Middle School and have a desk collecting monetary and other donations. The family are members.
b) Fire Company two on Island Road also accepts gift cards for them (place in an envelope and label what it's intended for):

Hope that helps,

I spoke to Becky today and they are GRATEFUL for all of the love and support from everyone! She did mention that storage is a huge concern so if anyone has space or a storage unit, it would be greatly appriciated! Also, gift cards would be easier because of the lack of storage and currently they are in a hotel so they will have to be carring around all of the things donated! Keep up the love and support! Once again the family wants everyone to know THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL they are for everything everyone is doing to help get them back on their feet! Xoxo

The non-profit Saddle River Valley Cultural Center will be making a modest monetary donation. Please advise, if I should still drop off at DQ, or if they prefer different.
Also, please let Roger and Becky know that the family is welcome to this Saturday's 3 PM "Magic Show" performance at the center on West Saddle River Road:
