The Mahwah Thunderbirds youth wrestling team has grappled against the competition, and come out on top. The team finished its dual meet season at the top of the Tri County Youth Wrestling League with a record of 13- 1. That record makes this season the winningest in the team’s history.
According to participants, the Tri County league is “recognized as one of the toughest youth wrestling leagues in the state.” The Thunderbirds defeated teams throughout northern and western New Jersey including Philipsburg, Randolph and Paramus.
This March, Ramapo Ridge Middle School will host the Mahwah March Mania Novice Tournament, which, in addition to some other optional tournaments, will round out the post season.
Wrestlers in grades Kindergarten through eighth grade put aside their age differences to work as a team. Participants say the wide age range of wrestlers is what makes the program “unique.”
Members of the 2011-2012 team include Max Grainger, Travis Arata, Sam Spira, Aidan Wallace, Ryan Kozdra, Daniel Nelson, Matt Surich, Justin Bierdumpfel, Hunter Albrecht, Garrett O'Shea, Danny Surich, Liam Diaz, David Cabrera, Daniel Chappel, Coach John O'Shea, Dean Maneri, Kyle Bierdumpfel, Cole Kreshpane, Dominic Roca, Doug Ervin, Nick Cowan and Justin Walker.
