Tractor Trailer Loses Axle, Backs Up Traffic for Miles
Police warn drivers should avoid Route 17 for several hours
A tractor trailer that lost an axle while driving on the border of N.Y. and N.J. shut the right lane and shoulder of Route 287 North in Mahwah, and caused massive back-ups on Route 17 North in Mahwah and Ramsey Wednesday evening, police said.
At about 4:10 p.m., an oversized tractor trailer lost all of its wheels on the right side, police said. Traffic on Route 17 North backed up about three miles or more, to at least the Franklin Turnpike exit in Ramsey.
Mahwah Police sent out a Nixle alert to residents at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday saying drivers should expect extensive delays on Route 17 North for one to two hours, and avoid the area if possible.
No other informaion about the accident was immediately available.

Except that the nixle alert didn't state WHERE the location people were supposed to avoid was.

I got the text last night and I understood from it to avoid Rt 17 North in Mahwah. (People from Mahwah know that Mahwah starts at Home Depot and extends to the state line. From that I surmised that traffic would eventually back into Ramsey and possibly beyond...)
So, "Stay off Rt 17" was all I needed to be told <G>. (And very timely too - just during wrestling drop-off/pick-up...)

I got the nixle text at exactly 5;30 pm. Knowing my son was about to be on his way home to Mahwah from Cliffside about this time, I called him and warned him. Instead of taking Rt 4W to !7N, he jumped on the PIP north to the thuway. Problem avoided. Thanks nixle :)
