Underground Burning Wire Complicates Ridge Road Power Restoration
Nearly 5,900 in Mahwah remain without power Friday; O&R says it cannot pinpoint a recovery time
A continuously-burning underground cable that is melting the asphalt on Ridge Road may delay power restoration to the many homes around the roadway, as well as to four of the township’s six schools, the library, and other buildings and businesses on and around Ridge Road.
Orange & Rockland discussed the situation with Mahwah officials in a conference call Thursday afternoon.
While the underground cable is not on fire, it is burning, letting off a tremendous amount of heat, and has started buckling the roadway, officials said. O&R has stationed a public safety officer at the scene to make sure no residents come in contact with the burning wire.
Though the utility could not provide a timetable for when the issue would be addressed, township officials said they have stressed its importance to O&R.
“It is a priority for them,” Mayor Bill Laforet said. “They know it’s a big deal, but we don’t have a timeline yet. It could potentially be a tremendous undertaking to fix this cable.”
O&R spokesperson Maria Pollard said the utility is working repairs like this into their ongoing power restoration efforts. “The issue with underground wire situations like this is they are often wet, get very hot, and this is probably a primary line,” she said. Until O&R can get a crew to fully assess and fix the problem, “we have a public safety officer there to make sure everyone is safe.”
Pollard said she could not provide much more specific detail about Ridge Road, but did say the utility has brought in hundreds of extra crews working overtime to address this and all of its other power outages.
“After the storm, we had 230,000 customers out of power. To give you some perspective, we only serve 300,000 – so that was 80 percent of our customer base,” Pollard said. “I’ve been here 12 years, and I’ve never seen as large a number of outages or the amount of destruction as we’ve seen with this storm."
Slowly, Mahwah residents have been getting power back. After Hurricane Sandy, over 9,000 in the township were without power. Friday morning, O&R reported 5,896 customers in Mahwah remained without power.
However, Pollard said an exact timeline for when the remaining outages would be rectified isn’t possible.
“We know our customers’ patience is wearing thin,” she said. “But, we are progressing by where the circuits are, the damage, the resources we have and the number of people affected [by the outage],” she explained. “People would like to hear a date when we’ll be in their town, but unfortunately, we’re not at the point where we can give out information like that.”
O&R hopes to have its entire system up and running again by Nov. 11, she said.
Mahwah school district officials were not immediately available Thursday to comment on how the burning wire and outage at Ridge Road may affect school going back into session.

Let the residents who are impacted by this specific outage know so they can make other living arrangements. Don't keep them "in the dark" regarding their cause for outage. People remain in homes with temps dropping to the 50's inside with the hope that today will be the day they get power.

Thank you for the info. Mayor needs to notify specific residents that are affected. Reverse 911 doesn't work when all their phones, Internet and cable are down. Time to go old school an deliver the word by posting notices on doors if needed. Children, the elderly and ill should not remain in these cold, unsafe conditions hoping any minute their power will be restored if it is not. Let them know ASAP so they can find other temporary housing.

This doesn't seem to be true. If they were progressing this way, there are thousands of residences on Ridge Road, so we would see trucks there and it would be a priority. Ridge Gardens, Society Hill, Darlington Ridge, Ramapo Ridge, etc. The "number of people effected" is probably a few thousand households. I haven't seen one truck in the area since the storm ended.

I live on linden....when i got home last night..there were 20 trucks parked from linden to darlington....i am not sure they are there this morning....but i did see buckets extended and working last night.....
But the bottom line is, the mayor seems to be unaware of this.....stressing the importance of this seems to be a non working strategy..getting the governor on the line and getting the state involved in kicking o and r ass might be a bettr solution......

@ Andy Schmidt...I see from the text messages that the mayor has now decided to call in the NJ federalies as progress isn't up to speed..No Kidding, I figured that out on Wednesday. The Mayor was stressing that the crews would be up there asap..in truth, they were there 10 hours before he knew it. As soon as Gov Christie announced the crackdown on the NJ power suppliers, he should have been on the phone with the Governor, not waited till Saturday. OR, he should have called Pataki, as O and R is a New York supplier who gives a rats ass about NJ customers.

My husband and I are very worried about being forced to leave our home because the temperature had been steadily dropping inside and at some point it will no longer be safe for ourselves and our cats. There needs to be a better way to communicate this kind of information - most people have no way of checking emails or the internet and want to know a timetable for power returning. If work isn't being done immediately I find it hard to believe that they would even be able to get everything restored by the 11th...disheartening for sure!

I live at Ridge Gardens and there were many trucks working on the problem on Ridge Road yesterday. I went past at 6:15pm and the crews were there working. I am not sure why some neighbors are commenting that they have not seen any trucks. It's a tough situation, but we have our homes intact. This is a relatively small inconvenience compared to those that lost everything.

MR. Mayor FYI, I live off of Ridge Road in Society Hill and I have not seen anyone to assess anything as of yet. We are going on 5 days without power, no heat and without any communications from your office. No outreach to the Society Hill/Ridge Garden Community. We had to learn about the “situation” from the Patch, on line for the few that have employers that are open and have heat and internet service. I am not sure you are aware, because I haven’t seen any representation from your office canvassing the neighborhood, to make sure that your tax payers are ok and are if they need anything…. Do you realize that we have elderly, young children, babies and a lot of pets that live in the community? The temperature is dropping, there are NO stores open to buy more candles, batteries and if they are they are out of stock. Have you set up a shelter for people to get warm?
I heard a date of something like November 10th? That is totally unacceptable, you have kids who are not in school and a lot of OLD people and should not be expected to go without HEAT till then.
You need to get every available Orange and Rockland worker to get up to Ridge Road and start working on this “situation” -- It should be TOP PRIORITY – No excuses please..
This is not good, we deserve to be informed, we need to feel like this part of town matters and we need the POWER ON. Get it done. Do what you have to do and get it done.
Plain and simple.

Mr. Mayor please help all of us who llive in the Condo's off Ridge Road and get in touch with these associations to get us all help and give us updates on this power problem. Thursday was the first day I saw a truck there. O&R said they are prioritizing jobs by how many households are affected. How this is not at the top of their priority list I have no idea. It's on the mayor to make sure this is a priority and keep his residents informed. Residents should have had a realistic timetable days ago so they can make other arrangements. This whole situation seems mishandled by O&R and the mayor.

Andy -- I was referring to the fact that the Ridge Road line affects thousands of housholds. I don't see where I compared Mahwah to Ramsey or where I said tax rates or income levels were a factor. Ramsey does not have the condominum population like Mahwah does meaning less households sharing the same grid. Society Hill, Ridge Gardens, Darlington Ridge, Ramapo Ridge --- 4 condo area's out because of this. In addition our High School, Middle School, and 2 elementary schools are out, all because of this power line. If total household's affected were in fact the deciding factor (as O&R says it is) then this should be the number 1 priority.

Mahwah covers such a large area. Residents feel as though they are forgotten. The Ramapo Brae, Stag Hill (Silver Lake) have nothing as well. There are children and elderly folks all over. Some folks don't have the luxury of having OR getting gas to get out to the police station or to the centers that are providing shelter, food etc. The police should canvas these neighborhoods and check on the residents. I understand this is a large scale problem but a lot of folks need help.

I'm not sure many of you know how power is delivered to your homes. Just because you don't see a truck parked outside your home or on your street does not mean the problem is not being addressed. Many of the outages are due to power grid problems or transformers that are located a distance from your home. A fix in one distant place can restore an entire area.... So lets hang in! O and R is doing a tremendous job along with companies from Florida Kansas. Etc. Remember they are serving hard hit places in surrounding towns including rockland and parts of Passaic.

I'm so glad I read your comment. I live on Ridge Rd and as much as it sucks to not have power, I cannot complain since I have my life, family, home and car intact. Have any of you that are writing these selfish comments seen/heard the tri-state area?! Some have nothing left!! Everybody has to make the best of what they have. Be thankful that you have your life and home. If you have time to leave a comment on The Patch then I'm sure you are capable to finding information on where you can get help for food, shelter, gas and charging stations. The Mayor, OEM and O&R and not sitting around with their thumb up their behinds. They are doing a wonderful job getting the job done as fast as then can. Appreciate the workers who come all the way from OH (and other states) to leave their families for a month or more to help the residents of Mawah (and the rest of NJ). People have not a clue what work is involved to get the power restored. Do all of you think that they can get the power restored in a few hours? Ummm.....maybe if there was 100 residents in Mahwah. Well, now that they got Ridge Road restored, I hope all of you will go out and order the supplies that you would need to to survive the Nor'easter that is coming next week. Good Luck.

Just to be clear here - I am commenting on the article that started this whole string of comments - Ridge Road - I don't care if they are working from a computer somewhere, we have not been contacted. We have had no communications - and the reverse 911 doesn't do anything because cable is out so I am not sure who thought of that. Nice Try. I have seen no activitiy to date on Ridge Road that was I was saying. I can't comment on any other street, town, etc., the article was specifically talking about Ridge Road, and that is where I reside.

Roberta, you have time to leave comments on The Patch with no power and cable but, you couldn't find ANYTHING about how you can stay connected on information that you might need involving Hurricane Sandy....ie text 888-777 to mahwah1 to receive updates on situations in Mahwah that are useful. I have been receiving plenty including on what is going on Ridge Road. The town did this since they knew that reverse 911 would not work. Patience gave you a perfectly great explanation on why you would not physically have seen any activity to date on Ridge Road which is not true at all. O&R has been on Ridge Road yesterday with 20 plus trucks and today with 10 plus trucks. Oh.....and about two hours after you wrote your comment the power came on. I hope this will help you for next time their is a storm. I heard next week we might get hit with a Nor'easter.

Roberta-any suggestions on how best to communicate with those residents that have phone service and/or internet through their cable company? I know the town is using text messages to cell phones, reverse 911 to land line phones, the township website and Mayor's Facebook page; in addition to utilizing the Mahwah Patch. Perhaps the condo associations could help by distributing and posting updates? Any other thoughts?

07430 - No, and to be honest I don't have time to be responding to this either. I have every right to complain about an article that was written specifically where I reside. If you are stuck at home w/no communications how would you think i would know about the text messages? I stuck to the article at hand, unlike others that has chimed in about their specific problem. Again, I was responding to an ariticle that included me as a resident. I did state earlier that i could not comment on any other town. For the record I didn't write that I had power on the Patch - you must be a follower on FB, following me, that is the only place I commented on... Good luck in the Next Nor'easter, sounds like you are connected with all the right people.....

I think that everyone iis missing the bigger picture here. After many years of bandaid patching this road, they just recently spent our hard-earned money to repave the road. However, I would like to have been a fly on the wall in the planning sessions now that I hear that the asphalt is being melted. If the expected life of underground cable is around 25 years, was there consideration to replacing that cable while the repaving was being planned? I would suspect, not know any better that this cable is old. Was our road repaved over old cable that was at the end of its livespan and ready to fail? Could someone in this Township who was involved with this repaving decision please respond? How much repaving will we have to pay for due to this melted road?

Additionally, has capacity planning been applied? Or, were users just added without additional or was additional service capacity added over the years as demand increased? I had worked on some construction projects in the past, and found it amazing how many times added capacity or upgrading out-dated facilities was not considered eventhough there were architects and consulting engineers assigned to the project.

I have been reading alot about the no power and how long it is taking to get the power on. My mother lives off of Ridge Road in Ramapo Ridge and my concern was that she did not know there was a charging station at the police station and the local church was serving a pasta dinner. I live in Pa and had a hard time reaching her and when I finally did I was able to let her know what was happening. She spent time at the Senior Center today and met alot of new people.
Since the schools are closed it would be a good time to get together some high school students to do community service and pass around flyers so people know what is happening and where they can go to get warm and maybe a hot meal

If you actually think that the Mayor had anything to do with the power coming back you are quite mistaken. Interesting..just drove all around fardale...Wires still hanging on youngs road....saw only one crew...and apparently, people are being told that it is all due to the burning wire on ridge road..which we all know by now is a bunch of BS as they have already stated there is no underground burning wire...
Doesn't seem the Mayor is onto to anything...except raking in more profit at his gas station...where he is over 10 cents more a gallon than the Gulf station across the street...and more than 20 cents more than the highway stations...

But he's always more expensive so you shouldn't be surprised. I get my gas there often times to support a local business of a person I know.

Goodness gracious!!! Power is still out in large areas of Rockland, Ringwood area and neighboring nj towns! Mahwah is not the only place dealing with outages! O and R services a large area. I agree it is not pleasant, but only so many hands can be on deck at anyone time! Service people are working around the clock in shifts. Have the people who say they have spotted crews getting coffee or resting in trucks thought about the fact that many of these responders are working 12 hour shifts with little sleep in between? I saw a few guys yesterday and thanked them!! and actual restoration could not be started until the storm passed and assessment could be done. If you lost power on Monday do ya think crews were going to be out at the height of the the storm? I think the response has been tremendous...

While it's a hardship to not live in your home b/c of lack of electricity and the things that it supports ( running water, heat hot water) , there are others who have nothing! I have been out since Monday, we will probably be the last in Mahwah to get it back on, but hey, I have a house to go home to. Panicking because I was running low on gas, but then the exileration at filling the tank. Not having hot water to bathe, then having a 1 hour shower, not eating a hot meal, then getting a Yankee pot roast meal at State line, I was able to do this, some people have NOTHING, so please , be considerant and shut up.
