Which Mahwah Roads Are the Most Dangerous? [POLL]

Study cited Route 17 as one of the most dangerous in the county

Over the past two days, Mahwah drivers have been dealing with extra-hazardous conditions on area roadways, thanks to another March snowstorm.

Last month, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a study citing Route 17 and Essex Street in Hackensack as the "most dangerous" roadways in the county. Of the 14 pedestrians killed on county roadways in 2011, three were killed on Essex Street, and one on Route 17. From 2009-2011, seven pedestrians were killed on the two roadways.

During the TSTC study period, there were no pedestrian deaths on roadways in Mahwah. But, reports of accidents occurring on roadways throughout the township show that local roads can be hazardous to drivers and pedestrians.

Last week, town legislators discussed an impending study of the Campgaw Road-Seminary Drive intersection that would help determine what safety measures should be put in place at that "dangerous" intersection. According to township officials, a traffic analysis of the intersection has not yet happened.

So, Patch wants to know what you feel are the most dangerous major roads in Mahwah.

The intersection of Airmount Road and Airmont Ave.

The intersection of 202, Island Road, at Reich Ave is by far the worse in Mahwah. People regularly greatly exceed the 30 mph speed limit on 202. Cars and building impede the view pulling out. That there haven't been more serious accidents there is a thing of wonder, but unless police actually make an effort to enforce the speed limit or a traffic signal is installed it's only a matter of time until someone gets killed there.

The Capgaw Rd./Seminary Drive intersection is a real problem because people are coming down the hill much faster than a lot of people allow for.I don't ride that road every day,but have had people pull right across the road -taking a big risk to all involved.I do not think installing a traffic light at that spot is necassary.

Airmont, Masonicus, East Crescent,...

I see a lot of residents (and even Don Bosco students) jogging along those roads, sometimes in the dusk or dawn, or even pushing strollers - yet there are no side walks to safely do so and the width and good condition of those roads invites higher vehicle speeds.

Instead of building "highways" through residential areas, we need to build/stripe our roads where the roadways are wide enough to easily accomodate one truck each in opposite direction - and then set side the remaining 5 feet for pedestrian use.

I'm all for sidewalks myself but would not want to shovel all the snow in the winter time.
One more observation. I have seen people walking and running on the street while there was a perfectly good sidewalk on the side. Go figure.

not only is Campgaw @ seminary dangerous, but adding insult to injury, when you turn into Seminary, at night, you dive into a pitch black road..there is no lighting...

I agree with Concerned. I am stunned that more accidents haven't happened at 202, Island Road, and Reich Ave. A 4 way stop sign there would make things much safer and the intersection easier to navigate.

Rte 202 and Campgaw are pretty scary at night and I just get this feeling that the car coming at me is drunk
There are some dangerous blind spots in the area too:

*the green bushes blocking Youngs Rd. and Crescent...why are they there?
*the huge forsythia bush blocking Grove St and Myrtle Ave view
*the giant red pick up truck blocking view at N Ramapo and 202

That red truck is going to cause a major accident! Why isn't the owner asked to move it to another location on the property?

Definitely the intersection of Seminary Drive and Campgaw Rd. Excessive speed, the fact that a lot of people don't use directional signals. In the summer the trees block your vision. I've seen too many accidents there.

I'm completely surprised that RT 287 was not mentioned. There are so many car accidents where RT 17 and RT 287 meets by the Sheraton Crossroads.

It isn't so much the roads that are dangerous (minus some of the cavernous potholes), but as much as the drivers who consistently drive faster than the posted speed limit. If everyone did the speed limit (including myself), all the intersections would be a lot safer...

Airmount and Airmont There should have been a light there long ago.

East Ramapo and Island Rd needs a light. Almost impossible to turn left there at times.

MacArthur Blvd right after you go thru the light at Central, going up toward Ridge. I have replaced two tires in twelve days. Yesterday morning I avoided the right lane since that is where I had the incident on March 8..so went to the left and huge pothole. While sitting waiting for AAA -I see another car coming up with hazards on and same front driver side tire flat.

East Ramapo and Island Rd - with the Montessori school there, traffic in the mornings is horrible and people don't let you make a left onto Island from E Ramapo. I have seen accidents there as well and it is where the crossing guard was hit a few years ago.

Route 202 on the Mahwah side is full of potholes. I had emailed the Mayor about this but no response. I travel this road to and from work every day and also weekends. At times i feel my engine might and the floor of my car might drop when I hit these numerous potholds(specially evenings). The arears from Bear Swamp Road-Seminary Drive to Franklin Turnpike Mahwah are especially bad. The area by the Route 17 underpass and exits from Route 17 to Route 202 are bad too. I do not know if the town has funds to fix this. If you do then please fix as I will be out of transportation to work and back.
