Do you have a fitness accomplishment that you look back on and feel so proud you achieved? Are you working toward one now?
For me, it was the New York City Marathon in 2008. I decided early in 2007 that I would try to get into the NYC Marathon. I still remember the night I submitted my lottery application for entry. Filled it out and hit send and immediately got butterflies.
When the notice came, "thank you for your entry to the NYC Marathon you have been accepted," I couldn't believe it. I thought "it's meant to be."
I picked a training program to follow, and did just that. Mapping out my running routes the night before each long run, and then hiding water under various bushes. Yes, you read that right. I do not care to wear a water belt, so I would set up water along the route so as I ran past certain places I can grab it and continue.
Training was going to take discipline. Heading out many dark early mornings being sure I got in the miles I needed to succeed in my goal. I trained, trained and trained some more - my goal was to complete 26.2 miles on my feet!
The day finally came. I felt great. I was ready! So many people cheering, kids along the route sticking their hands out for high fives - it was something I had never experienced.
I have run two other marathons since, but nothing tops that first one! When I crossed that finish line after 4 hours and 19 minutes of running, I had such an amazing feeling of accomplishment. All I could do was throw my fists in the air , whisper to myself "I did it," and let the tears of joy flow.
What is yours? Do you have one or maybe you have many?
You're stronger than you think!
