Analysis: Devils And Mets

NEWS ITEM-RIP 2012 NEW JERSEY DEVILS

The New Jersey Devils quest for the Cup ended this week as the Los Angeles Kings won hockey's ultimate goal four games to two. It was a fabulous year for the Devils who overachieved all preseason predictions as they advanced the the Stanley Cup Finals.

This year Martin Broduer returned to greatness in goal at the age of 40. Zach Parise established himself as the most sought after free agent this summer and many new players such as Adam Henrique emerged and perhaps finally the Devils can settle on coach De Borer for many years to come. As with any successful organization, though, there are many major issues for the Devils as they begin the off season.

Ownership needs to firm up the financial health of this team. Serious offers are about to come to Parise's attention and the Devils must that is MUST retain his services to maintain this year's progress. Salvador and Carter are also free agents and must be kept on the team. Marty has said he wants to return and working out an agreement with him should not be difficult.  It is probably a good idea however to begin to look long-term for youth in goal most likely through the NHL entry draft.  All in all, New Jersey completes a great season and Devils fans know there's more in store

NEWS ITEM-YANKEES SWEEP METS

Baseball's subway series part one was no contest and the Yankees humiliated the Mets in the Bronx. While both teams are having very successful springs, hope and tension filled the air in the Cathedral of Baseball as Johan no hit Santana took the mound against the Bombers on Friday night. Four home runs later, seeds of doubt had been planted in Flushing.

There has been talk of reducing inter-league play which would in turn reduce the number of Subway series games that would be played each year. Judging by the size and sounds of the sellouts in the Bronx this would not be a good idea in this area, but the fact of the matter is inter-league play is not quite as popular in other parts of the country. Do you really think anybody in Kansas City would be excited if the Pittsburgh Pirates came to visit? Me either.

This is going to be a major problem for baseball because inter-league games effect playoff races and can make schedules uneven so it bears watching to see how it affects our area specifically the Subway Series
