Just as quickly as winter is about to become spring what are you going to do as sports enthusiasts here in northern New Jersey? As the cheers for our Super Bowl champions fade what do we do for sports entertainment now? Well, here I am with some ideas to save th day or days!
The best kept secret in the sports scene today is a team that has led its division since October and is currently the number one team and its league. That's right, its the NEW YORK RANGERS who have not finished first in their diviision since 1994. Ranger fans recognize that year because it is also the year that the Rangers' Stanley Cup Championship drought of 54 years came to an end.
Coincidence? Maybe, but this year's team has been an entertaining bunch featuring tight checking, physical defense, and timely scoring and outstanding goaltending by King Henrich Lundqvist. Whether or not they win the Cup, they are worth at least a look so long as you don't have Time Warner Cable.
As for the New Jersey Devils, they are having a rebound year after last year's underwhelming performance. Sadly the on-ice performance of the team is overshadowed by a shaky financial situation where there has been talk of possibly trading thier best player, Zach Parise, instead of losing him to free agency this summer.
The winter pro basketball season got off to a late start due to union labor vs. the owners inertia, but at long as there may be a reason to watch the Knicks. The Nets are going through the motions as they await the move to Brooklyn next year. The Knicks fortunes have been buoyed by the addition of the team's second Asian player, Jeremy Lin.
The point guard from Harvard has been a one man infusion of new blood and excitement at MSG. Lin adds excitement with his speed and creativity and has made the rest of the team better. The Knicks are riding a 5 game winning streak as of this writing and with the retun this week of Carmelo Anthony and Amare' Stoudamire finally they might have a legitimate chance to reach the NBA finals
Adding to the offerings of pro sports is March Madness, college basketball's two week championship tournament and for me the real official beginning of spring; major league baseball opening day and pro golf's first major tournament of the year.....the Masters.....I feel warm already.
