Newark Mayor Cory Booker ended months of speculation Thursday when he announced that he was considering a run for US Senate. “[ I ] will complete my full second term as mayor. As for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for The United States Senate in 2014,” Booker said in a statement released shortly before noon. Political observers in the state and beyond have speculated whether Booker, 43, a Rhodes scholar and Bergen County native, would run for governor against Chris Christie in 2013 or seek the Senate seat now held by Booker’s fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg. But, Romney supporters from Mahwah donated more money to their candidate of choice, report says
More Mahwah residents cast their vote for Mitt Romney in November’s presidential election, but more than double the number of people from Mahwah who donated money to the Romney campaign, donated to the Obama campaign. According to an interactive map posted on NJSpotlight.com Friday, 403 Mahwah residents contributed to the Obama campaign from March 2011 through Nov. 2012. Only 198 donated funds to the Romney campaign during the same time period. But, the amount donated by Romney supporters was much higher. Romney raised $80,033 from Mahwah contributors, whereas Obama only raised $40,332, the map reported. Sbarra beat newcomer Jonathan Marcus by 32 votes, county results certified Wednesday
By a margin of 32 votes, candidate Steve Sbarra will officially be sworn in to the third seat up for election on the Mahwah township council this year. Certified county election results posted Wednesday afternoon verified preliminary results gathered in the township on Election Day, when Sbarra led first-time council candidate Jonathan Marcus by 37 votes. According to the official results released by the Bergen County Clerk’s office Wednesday afternoon, which includes counts of the absentee and provisional ballots cast, 2,131 residents voted for Sbarra. 2,099 voted for Marcus. The majority of Mahwah voters did not agree with the county, state and country's choices
In the county, state and federal elections held Tuesday, the choices made by a majority of Mahwah voters did not match up with those made by the rest of the voter base. From offices ranging from the President of the United States to some local races, Mahwah residents tended to favor the losers of the elections. According to the unofficial tallies of Mahwah votes released by township clerk Katherine Coletta Friday, the majority of Mahwah voters chose the losing candidate in most non-local elections. Republican Rep. Scott Garrett captured the redrawn 5th district Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, the Associated Press reports. Restricting expanded Garrett's longtime Republican-leaning district to include Democratic strongholds of Hackensack and most of Teaneck. Despite being vastly out-fundraised, Gussen maintained the district was winnable with support from Bergen votes.
