Donovan Calls for Attorney General to Investigate Sheriff's Department

Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan says sheriff's officers "jeopardized" public safety by not following protocol on handling "live explosives" at the Bergen County gun buyback in April.

The ongoing feud between Sheriff Michael Saudino and County Executive Kathleen Donovan intensified again this weekend, with Donovan calling for the attorney general to investigate claims the sheriff's department jeopardized the public's safety in handling "live mortar rounds". In a statement released to the press on Saturday, Donovan said the sheriff's department failed to turn live mortar rounds to Bergen County Bomb Squad members during the April 13-14 county gun buyback, as is protocol. "We applaud the Sheriff for a successful and worthwhile program, but we are concerned about the inappropriate and potentially dangerous way live mortar rounds were dealt with," Donovan said. "My concern is that the safety of the citizens of Bergen County…

Its clear double dipper Donovan has checked out and is filing numerous lawsuits to help out Trewinski and his law firm. It makes sense that is why the NWBCUA is being forced to use Trewinski law firm for legal work. Add in Fair Lawn Deputy Mayor/Deputy Chief of Staff large 23% raise working for Donovan and its clear Donovan will not be serving another term.   more ›

PHOTOS: Spring Swing Raises $10K for Winter's Playground Project

Organizers hope a brick paver drive and a pending grant from the county will raise more to help pay for the playground's construction.

Members of the Winter’s Park Playground Committee say a community fundraiser last month gave their campaign to overhaul the playground near Winter’s Pond a big financial boost, and is leading into several other opportunities that they say will potentially raise more. The Spring Swing, the committee’s largest community event to date, was held at the Apple Ridge Country Club at the end of April. According to organizers, it raised about $10,000 for the project. Kim Bolan, a resident who heads up the volunteer Winter’s Park Playground Committee called the fundraiser “a success.” “Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time supporting Winter's Park,” she said. Now, the group has shifted its efforts to its next big project, a personal brick paver …

Township Suggests Fixes to ‘Dangerous’ Intersection

A study needs to be done before a traffic light could be installed. But, officials say quicker, cheaper improvements might help alleviate some safety issues at the Mahwah intersection.

An intersection that township officials have called "dangerous" and say is in need of safety upgrades may soon see some changes. While Mahwah waits for a lengthy Rutgers University study to determine whether or not a traffic light is needed at the intersection of Campgaw and Seminary Roads, township officials say some other improvements could be made to the roadway to improve safety conditions. Township engineer Mike Kelly reported at a council meeting last week that he recently met with representatives from the Mahwah Police Department, the county, and the Rutgers University Transportation Safety Resource Center at the intersection, which has the Maryrest Cemetery on one side and the entrance to the Rio Vista development on the other. The…

Report: Crossroads Settlement Talks Reach Impasse

Pending litigation over the proposed 600,000 square foot retail development will not settle, report says. The lawsuits now await a judge’s decision.

After two rounds of discussions at a Superior Court in Hackensack, the three parties involved in two pending lawsuits surrounding the proposed Crossroads Town Center development on Route 17 will not settle out of court, NorthJersey.com reported Wednesday. According to the report, the Committee to Stop Mahwah Mall, a resident group that formed in 2011 to fight the proposed project, demanded during settlement talks this week that the two “big box stores” be removed from the developer’s plan. Representatives for the Crossroads Developers refused to bend on the design, saying that they must stick to the specifications in the ordinance allowing for the development, the report said. On Monday, CSMM lawyer Michael Kates met with Crossroads …

We'll see who's right about that five years after, if the mall is actually built. As to improvements to Mahwah, the developer has no obligation to Mahwah after planning and building permits have been approved and inspected other then to pay their millions in taxes every year. If they wish to contribute voluntarily to Mahwah's future, that is their prerogative just like any other citizen or …   more ›

Mahwah Receives $150K Grant to Repave 'Busy' Roadway

The repaving should not interfere with an NJDOT construction project simultaneously happening on the thoroughfare, officials say

By the time the New Jersey Department of Transportation is through with it, Macarthur Boulevard should be a very different roadway. Governor Chris Christie announced last week a $150,000 DOT grant that will pay for a repaving of a section of the westbound half of the roadway. According to local officials, the grant will pay for paving from the Route 17 overpass to Ridge Road. Mahwah’s grant was part of an $86.5 million package that will help fund road projects across the state. According to a release from the DOT, 48 Bergen County towns were among the 406 municipalities statewide that received grants. Mayor Bill Laforet said the repaving will likely happen during the next few months, but said it should not interfere with another DOT …

Community Honors Local Soldiers' Families

Locals with family members currently serving overseas were invited to a Mahwah Township Council meeting last week and presented with special honors for their sacrifices

A respectful crowd watched last week as local residents with family members actively serving in the military were honored by members of the Mahwah VFW Post 7124, the Mahwah Marine Moms, township politicians, and Senator Gerry Cardinale during a brief ceremony held at the start of a township council meeting. Families from around Bergen County received the "Blue Star Banners" Thursday as a recognition of their sacrifices. Members of the VFW post escorted members of the families to receive the recognition during the ceremony. Families of the following soldiers received banners: Also recognized at the ceremony were members of the Civil Air Patrol unit, a volunteer US Air Force auxiliary unit, that trains in Mahwah. In the program, cadets ages …

Christie: Weight Loss Surgery 'Intensely Personal Issue'

Governor chides reporters for obsessing about 'silly,' 'shallow' subject, says he is not a role model

Gov. Chris Christie reluctantly fielded reporters’ questions Tuesday about his February Lap-Band surgery, but said he would not be providing the public with any news as he heads towards his weight-loss goal, which he pointedly refused to disclose. "This is it. You ask me any more questions about this, I’m not answering,” Christie said during a groundbreaking ceremony at a Newark vocational high school. "I’m not going to be giving you all updates as this goes along. ... I’m not giving people a day-by-day, week-by-week, blow by blow," he said, adding, "I don’t care to be a role model for anyone. This is an intensely personal issue." The governor told the New York Post Monday night he’d had Lap-Band surgery in February because of concerns …

Christie Underwent Weight Loss Surgery In February

Governor tells New York Post that Lap-Band procedure was done at the urging of his family. An NYU doctor made house calls to Christie's Mendham home to not draw attention to the surgery.

Gov. Chris Christie underwent stomach-shrinking Lap-Band surgery in February, he confirmed to the New York Post on Monday night while refuting speculation that he was slimming down for a White House run in 2016. Christie quietly had the Lap-Band — or laparoscopic adjustable gastric binding —procedure done in a New York hospital, telling the paper that he agreed to the surgery at the urging of his family after turning 50 in September. Sean Conner, a spokesperson for Christie, confirmed the story to Patch Tuesday. The governor insisted that the Lap-Band was not inserted to help him lose weight in the run-up to 2016. "I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary …

Should Mahwah Have a Dog Park?

The mayor has put out a survey asking residents for their feedback on the idea.

Mahwah’s administration is asking residents for their thoughts about whether or not a dog park should be built in the township. Mayor Bill Laforet announced Monday that he posted a survey on his website asking residents for feedback on the possibility of a dog park. “I’ve heard a lot of times from residents that they’d like to see a dog park in town,” Laforet told Patch Monday. “I thought this would be a good way to gauge the feelings of the whole community about the idea.” There are not yet any concrete plans for a park, he said. Officials have not yet debated options like how big the park would be, or where it would be built. The survey is meant to be more exploratory, Laforet said. “The first step is really just to get the pulse of the …

Trails Conference Gets OK To Restore Historic Schoolhouse

The Darlington Schoolhouse will become the NYNJTC’s new home

The New York New Jersey Trails Conference is now officially set to start restoring and renovating the interior of the Darlington Schoolhouse, a historic building at the end of Darlington Avenue, originally built in the 1800’s. The volunteer environmental group, which maintains nature trails throughout Bergen County and the Hudson Valley, N.Y., maps those trails for area hikers and promotes education about trails, was granted several zoning variances at a Board of Adjustment meeting last Wednesday. After acquiring the historic property along with the township in 2007 using Green Acres and Bergen County Open Space funding, the Trails Conference completed exterior renovations on the building last year. Now, it will be able to complete its …
