Apple & China Mobile

Apple will begin selling iPhones, partnering with China Mobile, in China this Friday. When the deal was initially announced on December 22nd, there was a positive reaction to the stock price as well as to the market overall. The finalization of this deal means that Apple, arguably the most influential technology firm in the world, is now a business partner with China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile operator. Market analysts, as well as commentary from the leaders of both organizations, signify that this is thought of as a watershed moment for both Apple and the telecommunications industry as a whole.

In addition to the headlines concerning additional unit sales, increased revenue/profits, and higher market share, there are several business stories and questions that are worth thinking about.

1) What will the reaction be from other mobile carriers to this news? This includes both domestic and international competitors. Samsung, AT&T, China Unicom, and China Telecom are unlikely to simply sit by idly.

2) Intellectual property issues — there have been numerous instances of Chinese copycat firms simply reverse engineering products once they are sold/manufactured within mainland China. How will both China Mobile and Apple take steps to prevent this?

3) What about data security? Again, data security and the protection of personal information is arguably more important than ever before. How will these firms take steps to protect customer data?
