Why We Need Robbie Cano

Plus, a compliment for the Devils and why I think Justin Tuck should watch out

While we wait for the winter sports to go down the stretch to the post season and baseball to finally begin and then Augusta, here are some things that I am thinking about...

I THINK THE YANKEES BETTER FIND A WAY TO SIGN ROBBIE CANO, NOW

Robbie Cano can become an unrestricted free agent after the end of the upcoming baseball season. Without a doubt, the Yankees best player Robbie figures to need a couple of wheelbarrows for all the money that's gonna be thrown his way. For the first time in my memory the Yankees will have not one but two competitors that will be bidding for Cano's services.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Los Angeles Dodgers will make a hard push to sign Cano after the season. The Yankees are reminded daily what a disastrous deal they made signing A-ROD to a 10-year, 30 million dollar contract.  Cashman and the Steinbrenners have to get creative and do it before Robbie walks away for nothing.

Cano is a legitimate threat to hit .320 with 30 homers and 110 RBIs for the next few years. The question is how many years. Cano is about to turn 30 and the Yankees desperately do not want to find themselves overpaying a player in his late 30s for numbers achieved in his late 20s. (Are you listening A-ROD?).

The Yankees should offer Cano a 5 year 125 million dollar deal with the idea that it would give Cano another shot at free agency in his prime years and give the Yankees an out if by some chance he under-performs. Seems like a fair deal, right? The only problem is Cano's agent is the same as A-Rod's. Stay tuned!

I THINK LOU LAMORIELLO IS THE BEST GM IN SPORTS FOR OUR AREA

Once again the NJ Devils have climbed to the top of the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference and once again the departure of a big asset has hardly mattered. After Zach Parise left NJ for Minnesota even the most ardent Devils fan had to be concerned.  Largely due to great drafting and player trades and free agent signings by Lamoriello, the Devils have stayed consistent since the 90s and for that he is to be congratulated

I THINK JUSTIN TUCK SHOULD BE WATCHING THE CLASSIFIEDS

The Giants did not renew Osi Umeniora's contract and seem intent on freeing up as much money as possible to pursue free agents.  Word comes out of Indianapolis that DE Dwight Freeney was released by the Colts and would not mind playing in New York.  No doubt GM Jerry Reese will reach out to Freeney on behalf of Big Blue and maybe the Giants might not have to pay Justin about 6 million for next year.

I THINK I SAW GOLFERS THROWING SNOWBALLS

Maybe I was dreaming but I could have sworn I saw golfers in Arizona throwing snow balls. Did anyone else see that? Opening day less than 45 days away?
