What's Going On? Opening Day Baseball, In Japan?

Gripes with sports stories making headlines

NEWS ITEM: Major League Baseball opens the 2012 Regular Season in Japan.

That's right, Japan. Did you know that? Funny neither did anyone else. America's past time begins its new season over 6,000 miles away. Something is wrong with this picture.

The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners began baseball's 2012 regular season in Japan last week in a 3 game series, with games begining in the wee hours of the morning east coast time. Incredibly, both teams will return to the States and then resume SPRING TRAINING activities. This makes no sense. In this case, baseball commissioner Bud Selig has sold baseball's soul to non-American markets. I feel deprived of a ritual of spring -- opening day of the new baseball season here in the New York area. The Yankees and Mets start regular season play thi week!

We did not know of baseball's opening day in Japan because very little marketing of the event was done here in America.  Even baseball's own network MLB did not cover the game live or borrow the feed from the Seattle Mariners so that if one did want to watch opening day it was not possible outside of Seattle. So, all of the other major league teams open up this week, with a loss of lusture. Does this make any sense to you? Me either.

NEWS ITEM NUMBER 2: Tim Tebow Meets the Press

Find out what's happening in Mahwahwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

At the New York Jets Fieldhouse in Florham Park newly aquired with over 200 reporters on hand. Oddly enough, none of the Jets' senior management accompanied Tim - they were in Florida for league meetings. I like Tim Tebow very much, he is the kind of man you want your daughter to find. He is well known for his highest passion, his faith.

There are two things in this situation that do not match, however. First, the Jets have a number one quarterback in Mark Sanchez who just recieved a muti-year contract extension from Gang Green. Second, Tebow's quarterback skills do not meet NFL standards. So the Jets have now reached a unique status in the NFL - they have traded for a quarterback controversey that wasn't needed. With gaping holes throughout offense and defense, the Jets added a quarterback and ignored needs for a pass rush, speed at safety, wide recievers, running backs, and offensive linemen. After all, this is the team that is in contention for the Super Bowl...every spring.

NEWS ITEM NUBER 3: to coach the New Orleans Saints if current suspended coach Sean Payton asks him to.

We will forever be indebbted to Parcells for bringing the Giants to thier first Super Bowl championship. I was at the Giants Stadium press conference when he was introduced as the Giants head coach repiaceing Ray Perkins. Bill, enough is enough, stay retired PLEASE. You are now 70 years old, enjoy life take it easy. I envy you.
