NYC Subway Sculptor to Help Restore Mahwah's Darlington Schoolhouse

George Trakas, the environmental sculptor behind the Newtown Creek Nature Walk in Brooklyn and a sculpture inside an NYC subway station, will design the landscaping at Mahwah’s Darlington Schoolhouse, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference announced in a release last week. 

The historic school is currently undergoing a preservation and renovation process, and will be the future headquarters of the Trail Conference.

According to an announcement from the Conference, Trakas is known for recycling local materials and incorporating them into his work. He has designed several well-known projects, the NY-NJTC release said:

• Newtown Creek Nature Walk in Brooklyn. It was designed by Trakas and built by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection as part of the upgrade of the Wastewater Treatment Plant at Newtown Creek. 
• Beacon Point, Beacon, NY, comprising an angling deck, boardwalk and bulkhead adjacent to the Dia:Beacon Museum.
•  “Archean Reach, Sea House, Mined Swell”, MTA, Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn.
• Public sculpture inside the Atlantic Avenue – Barclays Center subway station.
• Footbridge across a canal in County Mayo in Belmullet, Ireland.

The Trail Conference has been fundraising for several year to help fund the renovation.

“Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, any incremental costs relating to Mr. Trakas services will be fully funded and will not require the raising of additional funds,” the Conference said.

The NY-NJTC broke ground on its final phase of construction at Darlington last year, and started interior construction last month.
