Church Asks Locals to Consider 'Advent Conspiracy'

The holiday shopping season is in full swing.

Pastors at Mahwah’s Plant Church are asking both members of their congregation and members of the community to consider the “Advent Conspiracy” this Christmas.

“Basically, it’s asking people to spend less so they can give more,” Plant Pastor Rob Parker said. “You’re still going to buy gifts for your kids and your family, but we are asking people to buy less so they can use their time and money to give back.”

The Advent Conspiracy is a multi-church movement with participating groups across the country. According to its website, it advocates participants spending less money during the Christmas season to limit the amount of stress, angst and debt Americans experience during the holidays.

“Quick question for you: What was the one gift you remember getting for Christmas last year?” the Advent Conspiracy site asks. “Next question: What about the fourth gift? Do you remember that one? Truth is many of us don't because it wasn't something we necessarily wanted or needed. Spending Less isn't a call to stop giving gifts; it's a call to stop spending money on gifts we won't remember in less than a year.”

Instead, the group asks people to spend time with loved ones, and time helping those in need.

Members of the Plant Church say they are working to provide ways for locals to participate in the movement.

Each Sunday, the congregation hosts a food drive for the Center for Food Action.

The Plant is also collecting donations to help fund a newly-built medical facility in Uganda. Locals can download a donation form on the church’s website and mail it to the Plant with a donation.

And, the Church is hosting an event at the Mahwah Bar & Grill this Sunday, Dec. 2. Local musician Josh Pierce will be playing at MB&G, and 10% of all proceeds made Sunday will be donated to victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Parker said the Church hopes these events will help people "tangibly apply their faith" during the holiday season.
