24-Hour Storm Could Produce a Foot of Snow, Expert Says

Meteorologist says classic coastal storm will be nasty and create a 'pretty big mess.'

Here we snow again.

Northern New Jersey is about to get slammed with what weather experts are calling a 24-hour event from Wednesday night into Thursday night, and could leave behind as much as a foot of snow and ice.

Deemed the first “classic” coastal storm of the year by meteorologist Rob Reale at Weather Works in Hackettstown, snowfall will begin around midnight Wednesday into Thursday. Motorists looking to hit the roads for work Thursday morning will be greeted by one- to two-inches of snow on the pavement with more to come, Reale said.

As Thursday morning progresses, snowfall totals will reach anywhere between three and six inches, and then turn over to ice and freezing rain in the afternoon, Reale said.

It won’t end there, though. Once the wetter precipitation stops, more snow is expected for the evening commute Thursday, and won’t end until midnight.

“Driving conditions are going to be nasty,” Reale said. “There’ll be high winds, coastal flooding, and plenty of precipitation. It’s definitely going to be a pretty big mess.”

While the details of the storm’s track are still fuzzy, Reale said, residents in northern New Jersey can expect anywhere between 6 and 12 inches of snow when the storm wraps up.

Get used to it. I am 57 years old and I remember plenty of snow storms when I was a kid. Although I enjoyed the snow when I was a kid because I was an avid snowmobile rider as I have gotten older i'd much rather go to the warmer climates of the Carribean in the winter. Just took a week at Secrets Capri Riveria Maya in Mexico. Did a lot of good for the psyche. Reasonable for an all inclusive because I belong to the www.unlimitedvacationclub.com. Like to get away again before winter is over.

Don't you just HATE global warming?? Maybe they were right in the 70`s...its an ice age, stupid! Ice age, global warming, ice age, global warming...butter, margaring...blah, blah, blah...
BeachBum February 12, 2014 at 08:14 AM
Just stay home, its almost Spring, relax!

The correct terminology is NOT global warming: it is climate change. The polar icecaps are melting, which warms the oceans, which affects the climate. Our winters and summers are more severe. This is the warmest decade in recorded history. You can argue on the cause of climate change, but you can't argue that it isn't happening.
Roll Back Our Tax February 12, 2014 at 08:40 AM
Arlene... you are right about warmest decade in recorded history. But the hottest year on record in US is 1934 and the coldest year on record was 1912. So although we think we're suffering what did those people do back then when there was no A/C and you had to stoke the furnace in the morning?

Another Global Warming nut job. Don't go outside without gloves.....you could get frostbite! LOL
Ra Ha February 12, 2014 at 08:44 AM
So, climates DON'T change on their own? And do some research, there is more ice in Antarctica, according to National Geographic and other sources. And I agree with Roll Back, it was like this every winter when us late middle-aged folks were kids and young adults. We just had a string of very light winters and now are catching up.

Ace I think I recently read where a boat load of "Environmental Tourists" were frozen in those melting ice caps and had to be rescued by an multinational effort.

Is there a law in Montville about cars being parked in the street during a snow storm. Parsippany does and will ticket and tow if parked during a storm. I've seen quite a few streets with cars since the first storm and it makes it hard for trucks and school busses to get by. Consideration please!

I'm 55 and I was up in old forge NY snowmobiling with a friend a week ago. After i'm done plowing and shoveling, it's off to PA for more riding and ice fishing. Life is short... Go for it!
Wilnj February 12, 2014 at 09:43 AM
Ra Ha, who said they don't? That's the biggest problem with the discussion of this topic. The climate is changing. Is it man made? That's not necessarily germane to the discussion. The first concern should be 'Are we prepared for the coming changes?' Whether we have caused the change, accelerated it or whether it can be reversed is a separate discussion.
Hookerman February 12, 2014 at 09:55 AM
I laugh when people use one snowy winter as proof against global warming... while ignoring satellite images of polar ice caps from previous decades. Only a fool believes that climate change is measured at the micro level.
joe raich February 12, 2014 at 10:09 AM
Parsippany DPW/roads MUST clear ice from previous storms from driveways such as mine. Lack of blow torches and uncaring employees mean that many will be unable to get to the road from driveways !!! We're stranded until April. when is the next council meeting ?!! By the way, it's global extremes, not global warming. Get it real, Conservatives... do something.
Wilnj February 12, 2014 at 10:27 AM
joe - What? Why should they clear your driveway? There are rental centers where you can get a blow torch or Home Depot where you can buy one.
FL4LIFE February 12, 2014 at 11:44 AM
if people like ra ha read anything about global warming and didnt just listen to faux news, theyd realize global warming doesnt mean it going to be extremely hot. it refers to extreme weather condition hot and cold and stronger storms. shows how much research they actually do.
BerniesBarStool February 12, 2014 at 12:31 PM
snow,rain,sun,fog,cold,hot.....stop whining and be glad your alive and able to experience any of it

Another one obsessed with Fox News. Get over it. Not everyone agrees with you and watches Fox.

I think it's time to move to Florida.

"Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities,1and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position." http://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus (Although I suppose one can argue that basically ALL of the scientists are communist hippie pinko liberals.)
DD February 12, 2014 at 04:08 PM
It's hard to argue with that.
DD February 12, 2014 at 04:09 PM
I mean comprehend that. It's hard to comprehend that.
Jersey February 12, 2014 at 04:11 PM
If that was supposed to be satirical, it will be lost on most people as it was a little too dead-on.
Hookerman February 12, 2014 at 04:18 PM
I'm assuming it's satirical, but it's not that far removed from actual right-wing posts I've seen on the internet.
DD February 12, 2014 at 05:20 PM
And of course, much of the supposed "right-wing" nonsense you see on the internet is typed in by people attempting to show that ring-wingers are ignorant. It is, in fact, the height of ignorance to think that half of the nation is heartless and stupid. It defies logic. It's just plain dumb.
Jimmy Lawson February 12, 2014 at 10:39 PM
Wow it's just going to snow. Unfourtualy there is nothing that we can do about it but can someone tell me why everyone is turning friggin snow into a political thing?????? You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Get back to where you once belong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Windrunner February 13, 2014 at 03:02 AM
Is this a bad time to say I'd just really like a snow day called so there's no school tomorrow? and not get into the whole global climate change thing going down? probably......is
