Mahwah is set to host it’s second annual Joyce Kilmer Day this February, but according to an announcement from the event’s host, the Joyce Kilmer Society, this year’s will be happening on a big day.
February 2 is not only the anniversary of the poet’s penning of his most famous work, “Trees,” but also the date of the 2014 Super Bowl at the MetLife Stadium.
So, the Society, which formed in 2013 to celebrate the history of Joyce Kilmer, who lived in Mahwah and wrote the famed poem in the township, is throwing a pre-Super Bowl party celebrating the poet, it announced in its monthly newsletter this week.
The free midday party will be held at Roxanne’s Restaurant in Mahwah. At the party, Roxanne’s representatives will give details about a Joyce Kilmer bench the restaurant will be donating to the township, a Kilmer literature display, a souvenir brochure, Kilmer mugs and t-shirts, and complimentary refreshments.
Joyce Kilmer Day was established in Mahwah in 2013 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of "Trees." Township resident Alex Michelini formed the Society, worked to proved that the poem was written in the township, and along with other Society members, has put together events over the past year that celebrate the life and legacy of the poet.
