PD, Animal Control Searching for Horse who Ran from Mahwah Farm

Locals are being asked to look out for Chief, who belongs to an Oakland family and could have run to a number of surrounding towns.

Authorities in an around Mahwah are searching for a horse who they say has been missing for about a week.

According to officials from the Mahwah Board of Health, an Oakland family's horse has been missing since last Saturday, when it ran away from the Ramapo Valley Road farm where it was staying. Chief, a Paint breed who is mostly black and white, was being ridden near the Mahwah farm when the horse tripped and the rider jumped off, health department officials said. When another rider got close, Chief got spooked and was seen running toward Ramapo College and the Ramapo Valley Reservation.

Chief’s owners, a family from Oakland, have been conducting a search for the horse in and around Mahwah, surrounding NJ towns, and in nearby New York. The family has enlisted the help of the Mahwah Police Department and Tyco Animal Control to search for Chief.

According to health department officials, Tyco is hoping to find Chief as soon as possible. Tyco’s mounting concerns about the missing horse include that he may get lost on a roadway and cause an accident, or that the saddle he was wearing when he got lost might get him tangled in the woods, officials said.

However, searchers say they are hopeful that a local will see Chief and help lead to his rescue. Locals have been spreading the word about the missing horse via Facebook and other social media sites.
