Senior Center to Host 'History of Joyce Kilmer' Presentation

Event is free and open to the public.

Throughout 2013, the newly-formed Joyce Kilmer Society of Mahwah has been celebrating the 100th anniversary of the poem, “Trees.” Kilmer was a resident of Mahwah who researchers say penned the poem in the township.

So far this year, the Society has hosted lectures, set up exhibits, and even planted a Joyce Kilmer Tree at Winter’s Park.

Its efforts will continue this week with a video and slide show presentation on the poet at the Mahwah Senior Center, the Society and senior center announced last week.

This Wednesday at 12:15 p.m., the senior center will show the story of Kilmer and “Trees” through a 52-slide presentation and a video of the late Metropolitan Opera star Robert Merrill singing a musical adaptation of "Trees." The event is free and open to the public.

"We are delighted and proud to present this exhibit in the heart of Mahwah's senior community, many of whom learned Kilmer's poem "Trees" when they were school children,” Alex Michelini of the Joyce Kilmer Society of Mahwah, said in the release.
