52nd Street Band Coming To Mahwah

Dan Vechesky and his Billy Joel tribute band will "rock the house"

Dan Vechesky fell in love with the piano as an adolescent, when he started playing by ear. His dad encouraged him, and he started classical training at age 11.

Hearing Billy Joel on a local radio station in the early seventies where he grew up outside Philadelphia, a lightbulb went on. Vechesky said, "I immediately knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to play piano in a rock and roll band."

While working on a stage crew in college, he set up for a Billy Joel concert. He was fortunate to meet the man and have a conversation with him. Vechesky added, "Mr. Joel was gracious and encouraged me to pursue a career as a musician."

Recording Billy Joel's albums on reel-to-reel tape so they wouldn't get scratched, he studied every nuance of the music so he could reproduce it live. He became known as "Dan the Piano Man".

Vechesky played solo gigs at first, and joined other bands at times. But his great love was still being the piano-playing frontman.

Seventeen years ago when Billy Joel's "River of Dreams" came out, Vechesky was inspired to form his current tribute band, 52nd Street. With his wife Linda managing, the band became the tribute act he had always envisioned.

52nd Street has played every type of venue and performed everywhere from New York City shows and parades to Atlantic City Casinos to Hard Rock Cafe openings to corporate events all around the country. Vechesky adds, "I am most proud to have played at the annual 'Tunnel to Towers' run, in honor of fallen 9/11 hero Stephen Siller."

With him since the beginning is talented lead guitarist Ed Kuri.

Bass player Troy Rusnack has been with the band for 15 years. He is well known and respected for his musicianship, and energetic performances.

Vechesky also adds, "Many musicians from Twyla Tharp's Broadway Show 'Movin' Out' regularly play in my band." The show featured Joel's songs performed by the cast.

The band will be at Ramapo College Thursday evening at 8pm. For more information on the Ramapo College Concert Series, check out the website.
