Ramapo Grad Named Distinguished Student Teacher

NJ awards 15 student teachers throughout the state every year.

One of the best student teachers in the state came from a Mahwah School.

Kevin McOwen, a post-baccalaureate student who completed Ramapo College’s teacher education certification program in 2012, was awarded the New Jersey Distinguished Student Teacher Award in June at Rider University, Ramapo announced in a release Tuesday.

McOwen was one of 15 winners throughout the state. He marks the third time in the past five years that a Ramapo student has received the award.

“Each year, the New Jersey Department of Education publicly recognizes the year’s top graduates of teacher education programs in New Jersey’s colleges and universities through the New Jersey Distinguished Student Teacher Award program,” the release explained. “Each New Jersey college or university submits packets for the three top student teachers in their program. An independent panel of experts evaluates each student’s submission.”

McOwen is currently working as a math teacher in the Ridgewood school district.
