What Does That Light On My Dashboard Mean?

"Beyond the Pumps" says ignoring these indicators could be a safety hazard

Ever wonder how your car knows your tire is low on pressure?

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitor System) is really a remarkable innovation. Each tire has a sensor in it which communicates with a central computer which monitors air pressure in each wheel and in some cases even the spare tire. It’s a fact that tires, overtime  loose a certain amount of air and at some point your tires pressure need to be restored to the manufactures recommended pressure, you will  find on a door sticker indicating the correct pressure for your car.

When that yellow monitor light comes on the dash it tells you that you have a low tire. It can simply be a low air pressure condition or it can mean that you are getting a flat tire. Either condition requires your attention. Low tire pressures account for accelerated tire wear and also can cause a safety issue. The lower the tire pressure the hotter the tire runs, this excessive heat and low pressure could cause a “blow out”, leaving you stranded on the side of the road.  So it can’t be ignored. It’s a safety issue.
